Senior Natalie Calderon Wins Another National Championship

Senior Natalie Calderon (Pasadena, CA) earned her second national title of the week by winning the 2008 NCAA Triple Jump Championship at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, earlier today. She blew out the competition with her stadium and school record leap of 40’ 10 ¼”. The second-place opponent came in at 39’ 4 ½”, nearly 18 inches less that Calderon’s trophy jump.

On Thursday, Calderon won the Long Jump title with an impressive leap of 19’ 11”.

In other action, freshman Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) preformed well in her first national meet, taking sixth in the Javelin Throw with a toss of 138’ 8” for All-American honors. This improves upon her best mark of the 2008 season by more than two feet for the third-best throw in Redlands history.

Sophomore Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) also gained valuable experience by competing in the 800m Run. He clocked in at 1:53.77 during the trials but just missed qualifying for the finals.
