Late yesterday, graduate student Fritz Nugent (Tinley Park, IL)
captured the second national title of the day for the Bulldogs as
he won the 2008 NCAA Long Jump Championship with a leap of
23’ 6 ¾”. Competing at the University of
Wisconsin, Oshkosh, he defeated his opponent from McMurry
University by ¾” while improving upon his personal
best mark by ½”.
Following senior Natalie Calderon’s (Pasadena, CA) impressive
win in the Long Jump earlier Thursday, this marks two national
championships for the University of Redlands at this year’s
meet.
In Friday’s events, sophomore Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH)
competes in the 800m trials, with the finals taking place on
Saturday. In addition, freshman Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) makes
her debut at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in the Javelin
Throw. Also on Saturday, Calderon looks to improve upon last
year’s fourth-place finish in the Triple Jump.
