Graduate Student Fritz Nugent Wins NCAA Long Jump Championship

Late yesterday, graduate student Fritz Nugent (Tinley Park, IL) captured the second national title of the day for the Bulldogs as he won the 2008 NCAA Long Jump Championship with a leap of 23’ 6 ¾”. Competing at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, he defeated his opponent from McMurry University by ¾” while improving upon his personal best mark by ½”.

Following senior Natalie Calderon’s (Pasadena, CA) impressive win in the Long Jump earlier Thursday, this marks two national championships for the University of Redlands at this year’s meet.

In Friday’s events, sophomore Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) competes in the 800m trials, with the finals taking place on Saturday. In addition, freshman Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) makes her debut at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in the Javelin Throw. Also on Saturday, Calderon looks to improve upon last year’s fourth-place finish in the Triple Jump.
