REDLANDS, Calif. - The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released the 2023 Individual Scholar All-America team Monday recognizing a total of 2,290 (1,270 women and 1,020 men) swimmers and divers as Scholar All-Americans for the 2022-23 season. 

University of Redlands Graduate Student Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) represented the Bulldogs being selected for the third time in his career.  He majored in Human Resource Management and carried a perfect 4.00 GPA.        

Tom put together a record-breaking season for the Maroon and Grey qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 1650 Free before becoming a 2nd Team All-American after finishing 9th with a 15:35.59.  This time was a 7.58 second drop from his personal best, while at the same time setting new school records in the 1000 Free (9:24.19) and 1650 Free (15:35.59). 

At the Championships he also competed in the 500 Free coming in seeded 36th out of 39 competitors.  At the end of the event he finished 21st overall with a time of 4:31.97, dropping 1.6 seconds off his personal best.  He also moved up 15 spots from his original seeding.

To be named to the First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.50 and participate in their respective national championship. Second-Team selections also earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher and met the "B" time standard for the national championship or participated in a diving zone qualification meet.

Nearly 47% of the swimming & diving student-athletes honored are receiving a degree in a STEM related field. Top majors, in order, included Business, Biology, Psychology, Economics, Exercise Science and Mechanical Engineering. Below is a breakdown of the number of students recognized in each division:

  • Division I: 1,201 students were recognized - 721 women and 480 men.
  • Division II: 356 students were recognized - 194 women and 162 men.
  • Division III: 561 students were recognized - 265 women and 296 men.
  • NAIA: 139 students were recognized - 72 women and 67 men.
  • NJCAA: 33 students were recognized - 18 women and 15 men.
