Records Fall on Final Day of SCIAC Championships | Bulldogs finish 5th

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming teams wrapped up the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships Saturday with records being broken. 

The final six events took place at Splash, La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.  They included the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 1650 Free, 200 Fly, and 400 Free Relay. 

At the end of the evening the Bulldogs finished in 5th place on both sides.  For the women, they were edged 445.5-441 by Occidental for 4th, but did beat Caltech (6th – 428 Points), Cal Lutheran (7th – 264 Points), Whittier (8th – 227 Points), and La Verne (9th – 109 Points).

The men they fought from behind coming back from 6th place a day prior to get Chapman 298.5-296.5.  They also beat Occidental (7th – 262 Points), Whittier (8th – 227 Points), and La Verne (9th – 136 Points).

Men

Sparking the comeback for the men was senior Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) who came away with his top two performances of his career breaking both the 1,000 and Mile University of Redlands school records all in the same night.  He started things off in the 1650 Free finishing 4th overall with a 15:47.78.  This was the first record broken, which was set back in 2011 by Alec Alders (15:50.64).  But Jansen wasn't done as he also broke the 1000 Free record with a time of 9:29.06, which was also set by Alex Alders in 2011 (9:39.17). 

Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) started the scoring off in the consolations of the 100 Free taking 15th with a 46.72, picking up four points.  Davis Wingard (Springfield, OR) joined Jansen in the 1650 Free finishing 10th with a 16:42.19, which tallied another ten points.  Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) totaled another 16 points in the 200 Breast posting a 5th place finish with a 2:03.18.  Thomas Long (Brea, CA) (2:07.27) and Wingard (2:16.57) joined him, but in the Consolation Final going 13th and 18th, respectively, combining for an additional seven points.

Drew Heaston (Corona, CA) brought home four points in the 200 Fly taking 15th with a 1:56.32 and in the 400 Free Relay both the 'A' and 'B' teams combined for an additional 44 points.  The 'A' team took 5th with a time of 3:07.35 thanks to Jack Forsythe, Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA), Dan Bajda (Lombard, Ill.), and Eddow.  The 'B' team came away with a 13th place finish coming in at a 3:08.36.  This team included Walker, Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA), Heaston, and Long.                        

Women

Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) got things going for the women as they continued to make one final push.  She came in 15th in the 100 Free with a 54.75, which added four points to the total.  Then in the distance Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA) shined going 18:05.95, which put her 8th in the 1650 Free.  Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) joined her coming in 12th (18:37.19) and Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA) followed in 14th (18:54.55).  These three Bulldogs accounted for 25 points.

Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) got her chance in the 200 Back to add more points for UR and she did just that finishing 9th with a 2:08.47 that picked up another 12 points.  Lauren Kline (Parker, CO) earned a spot in the Consolation Final and she added another points as she took 18th with a 2:12.81.     

Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) got her first action in the 200 Breast taking 8th overall with a 2:24.96, which picked up an additional 13 points.  Hannah Parker took part in the Consolation Final and took 14th with a 2:30.83.  In the 200 Fly three Bulldogs scored led by Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX) who took 9th with a 2:12.92.  Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) would come in 10th with a 2:10.75 and Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA) would come in 15th with a 2:22.68.  All three totaled 26 points for Redlands. 

The final points on the day came from the two teams in the 400 Free Relay and they proved crucial.  The 'A' team of Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC), Setlich, Southmayd, and Nakagawa would come in 6th with a 3:38.06.  The 'B' team of Hayon, Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA), Emily Heaston (Corona, CA), and Parenti would take 15th with a 3:44.77.  These points mattered as they totaled 38 points putting the Bulldogs into 5th.
