Bulldog Women's Swim and Dive Tops Cal Lutheran 223-63

The University of Redlands swim and dive teams welcomed Cal Lutheran University to the Thompson Aquatic Center for a dual-meet in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. After sweeping both boards on the women's and men's side, the Bulldog women went on the defeat Cal Lutheran 223-63, while the men fell by a slight 119-169 margin.

Senior diver Sam Scarano (Boulder, CA), sophomore Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), and sophomore Erica Schickerling (Arlington Heights, CA) took a one, two, three punch off the 1-meter board with scores of 204.90, 181.65, and 175.65 respectively. Scarano also scored a first-place finish off the 3-meter board with a 246.50.

Senior Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) and junior Trey Gevers (Issaquah, WA) swept both boards as well as Miner took the top spot with scores of 194.50 and 222.30. Gevers landed second place with a 171.35 score off the 1-meter and 168.70 off the 3-meter board.

Redlands women set the tone early with a winning time of 1:51.86 in the 200 Medley Relay. Senior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL) and sophomores Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Parenti made up the victorious foursome.

Later on, sophomore Emily Heaston (Corona, CA) stopped the clock in the 200 Free with a first-place time of 2:03.32.

Nakagawa also out-touched the competition in all three of her other events, including the 100 Back (1:00.58), 50 Free (25.12), and 200 Back. In addition, Redlands women took second and third in the 100 Back and first, second, and third in the 100 Breast as sophomore Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) reached the wall with a winning time of 1:07.89.

After already adding points off the diving boards, Parenti outswam the competition in the 200 Fly (2:12.34) and the 100 Fly (59.65). Sophomore Mary Tanouye (Kiel, WI) and sophomore Emily Heaston (Corona, CA) followed in the 100 Fly with times of 1:02.90 and 1:03.03.

The Maroon and Gray women continued to roll through the day, taking the top-three spots in the 100 Free with Setlich taking first in 56.10, in the 200 Breast as Hagenbaumer out-touched the competition in 2:30.98, and in the 200 IM as junior Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) clocked a winning time of 2:15.46

Setlich, Tanouye, Heaston, and first-year Gaby Hayon (Westlake Village, CA) ended the day with winning 400 Free Relay as they finished in a quick, 3:49.39.

On the men's side, first-year Blake Eddow (Corona, CA), juniors Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) and Jack McCormick (Santa Rosa, CA) and senior Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CO) finished in second place in 1:37.03 in the 200 Medley Relay. Eddow also took top honors in the 200 Free with a time of 1:45.33 and added points in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:00.68 for third place.

Junior Jordan Convery (Fairview, OR) and sophomore Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA) took a two-three punch in the 200 Fly with times of 2:01.60 and 2:03.62. McCormick and first-year Jack Forsythe (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) did the same in the 50 Free with a second-place time of 21.90 and third-place time of 21.98. Skinner and Garcia took a two-three finish with times of 52.15 and 54.42 in the 100 Fly as well.

Sophomore Sam Ayers (Orinda, CA) and senior Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA) added key points for Redlands in the 100 Free. Ayers just slightly out-stretched Talag with respective times of 48.03 and 48.12.

The men also finished the day strong as Ayers, Talag, McCormick, paired up with junior Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa) in the 200 Free Relay. The quartet stopped the clock in 3:12.26 for first place.

Redlands welcomes Occidental and La Verne to the TAC on Saturday, February 8, at 10:30 a.m. The team looks forward to celebrating the careers of their seniors before the meet.
