Bulldog Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Falls to CMS

The University of Redlands women's and men's swim and dive teams headed to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday morning for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual-meet action. Despite strong finishes from multiple Bulldogs, the Maroon and Gray ended the day falling to the host. 

The women started the day off strong as senior diver Sami Scarano (Boulder, CO) nabbed first place off the 1-meter board (234.05) and the 3-meter board (238.05). In addition, senior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL), and sophomores Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), and Jaqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) teamed up for the 400 Free Relay and finished in third place. Their 4:05.48-minute finish added two points for the Bulldogs. Nakagawa also took fourth in the 100 Free in 55.43 while Setlich took fourth in the 500 Free in 5:37.65.

Hagenbaumer had the best finish of the day for the women, taking second in the 200 Breast. She out-touched the competition in 2:28.40.

A few events later, senior Taylor Cadile (San Jose, CA), junior Cassy Hauserman (South Elgin, IL), and sophomore Chessie Briggs (Tacoma, WA) took third (2:07.51), fourth (2:13.58), and fifth place (2:13.87) in the 200 Free, all adding points for the Maroon and Gray.

Junior Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) also performed well for the Bulldogs in the 400 IM. She touched the wall in fourth place in 4:49.48. In addition, first-year Leila Alejos (Portland, OR) and sophomore Kayla Smith (Redlands, CA) came in fourth and fifth place in the 200 Fly. Alejos stopped the clock in 2:23.35 while Smith finished in 2:35.25.

On the men's side, seniors Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA) and Bryce Hurick (Exeter, CA) placed fourth and fifth in the 200 Free in 1:51.10 and 1:54.13 respectively, both adding points for Redlands. Just one event later, juniors Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jack McCormick (Santa Rosa, CA) took second and fourth in the 50 Free. Zasas stopped the clock in 21.85 while McCormick finished in 22.16.

In the 200 Fly senior Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CO) and sophomore Reece Koe (Oxnard, CA) touched the wall 2:03.16 and 2:17.18 for fourth and fifth place.

Senior Anthony Gutierrez (Orinda, CA) and sophomore Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA) also added points in the 500 Free, finishing in 5:03.12 and 5:10.59 respectively.

Finally, Zasas and Talag combined talents with first-year Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) and sophomore Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA) in the 800 Free Relay for a third-place time of 7:14.37.

The Bulldogs welcome Cal Lutheran to Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday, February 1.
