Redlands Swimming's Youthful Talent Shines at Bulldog Pentathlon

The University of Redlands men's and women's swimming teams hosted the unique Bulldog Pentathlon on Saturday at the beautiful Thompson Aquatic Center to kick off the 2018-19 season.  While swimming 100 yards of each stroke to accumulate the lowest combined time, Brandon Leu of Chapman University won the men's competition, while sophomore Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) of Redlands came in first among the women.

Leu recorded a gold-medal time of 4:36.29, as highlighted by first-place times in three of the races.

For Redlands' men, first-year Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) impressed in his collegiate debut by taking second overall with a combined time of 4:39.30.  He touched the wall first in the 100 Breast in 1:00.07 and took second in the 100 Individual Medley with a time of 55.13. 

First-year Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA) finished third with a combined time of 4:44.06, which included a first-place showing in the 100 Free at 47.79. 

In addition, the Bulldogs gained a mark of 4:48.86 from sophomore Jordan Convery (Fairview, OR) for fifth place, while sophomore Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) came in 10th with a total of 4:55.05. 

For the women, Cano topped the competition with a five-race total of 5:20.82.  She earned the gold medal in the 100 Free with a time of 56.20 while placing third in the 100 Breast (1:11.26) and 100 IM (1:04.15).

Redlands' next top swimmer finished fifth, as first-year Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) made the most of her first Bulldog meet with a time of 5:25.94.  She captured a second-place result in the 100 Back by touching the wall in 1:02.68, just .2 behind the winner.

On the heels of a second-place performance of 1:01.13 in the 100 Fly, first-year Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) fired off a 10th-place mark of 5:33.75.  Senior Wendy McAleer (Simi Valley, CA) came in 13th overall with a time of 5:35.17.

In addition, first-year Sarah Martin (Tualatin, OR) won the 100 Breast with a time of 1:09.85 as the only women's competitor to go below 1:11.

Redlands looks forward to hosting the annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, October 27, at 4:30 p.m. before jumping into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday, November 10, by hosting the University of La Verne at 10:30 a.m.
