Bulldog Swimming & Diving Continues Season with Wins over Caltech

The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams resumed competition on Saturday in Redlands and won in dominating fashion against Caltech. The women prevailed, 183-43, while the men triumphed, 186-51.

The Bulldog women swept the meet, capturing first in every event.

Freshman Lauren Craig (Newcastle, CA) used her wide range of stroke competencies to win both the 100 backstroke (1:04.81) and the 200 individual medley (2:16.02).

Freshman Missy Utama (Walnut, CA) pulled away in the second half of the 100 breaststroke, winning the event in a time of 1:13.56.

In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO) used consistent splits to cruise to a first-place mark of 5:31.25.

A strong first 50 enabled sophomore Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) to post the top 100 freestyle standard (56.33).

The 100 butterfly featured a competitive race between sophomore McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA) and senior Danielle Caver (Highland, CA). Nakamura held on to best her teammate by .05 seconds, stopping the clock at 1:07.81.

Freshman Shirin Sedaghat (Boulder, CO) reigned supreme in the “splash and dash,” muscling through the 50 freestyle in 25.51.

Freshman Allie Bollella (Palo Alto, CA) offered one of the meet’s most impressive performances swimming the 200 freestyle, maintaining sub-two minute pace throughout the race to check in at 1:58.32.

In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL) covered the 40 laps in an event-best 11:42.89.

On the boards, senior Chelsea Hamilton (Parker, CO) and sophomore Shelby Mann (Bainbridge Island, WA) each corralled a top score. Hamilton placed first in the 1-meter (157.35) while Mann picked up first in the 3-meter (172.80).

The Maroon and Gray clocked the fastest mark in each of the relay events with the quartet of senior Kelly Goeres (Tigard, OR), junior Kelley Cooper (San Antonio, TX), Caver and junior Julie Schiering (Upland, CA) taking the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.07) and the foursome of freshman Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR), Craig, senior Melanie Loo (Waipahu, HI) and Sripramong claiming the 200 medley relay (1:56.90).

Additional elite performances came from Mann in the 1-meter (154.95), senior Laura Musgrave (Los Alamos, NM) in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.67), Loo in the 500 freestyle (5:37.52), junior Kayla Desai (Lakewood, CO) in the 100 backstroke (1:06.44), sophomore Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) in the 100 freestyle (58.01), Caver in the 100 butterfly (1:07.86), Cooper in the 200 individual medley (2:22.67), Medvec in the 50 freestyle (25.66), freshman Jessie Chansler (Kirkland, WA) in the 200 freestyle (2:02.01) and freshman Dionna Anast (Aloha, OR) in the 1000 freestyle (11:45.96).

The men nearly mirrored the women’s commanding efforts, winning 11 of the 13 contested events.

Seniors Ryan and John Floersch (San Jose, CA) each registered two individual-event victories. R. Floersch took the 100 freestyle (48.10) and the 200 individual medley (2:07.89) while J. Floersch gained the top standard in the 100 butterfly (56.50) and the 50 freestyle (22.09).

Sophomore Mike Grant (Weston, MA) hit the wall first in the 100 breaststroke, tapping in at 1:06.13.

With a combination of strength, grace and stamina, sophomore Greg Heinicke (East Wenatchee, WA) boasted a first-place result in the 500 freestyle (5:07.07).

The men’s 100 backstroke proved to be the closest race of the day as senior Ian Starkie (Arroyo Grande, CA) touched out Caltech’s Peter Buhler by .01 (57.65). Starkie held a .01-second advantage at the halfway mark, and both posted identical splits coming back to give Starkie the edge.

Freshman Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) held off Buhler in the 200 freestyle, bringing his final 50 home in 26.73 to finish at 1:50.16.

Junior Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA) provided the men’s final individual win of the meet, completing the 1000 freestyle in 10:06.48. His time fell a few seconds short of his pool-record standard (10:02.90), which he set against Cal Baptist University earlier this season.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Depew, freshman Matt Zaggy (University City, MO), senior Sheldon Gruendl (Danville, CA) and sophomore Steven Zarian (Superior, CO) finished first in a time of 1:32.42 while the contingent of sophomore Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA), senior Scott Tsukamoto (Dana Point, CA), sophomore Mike Camp (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) and senior Carlos Saldivar (San Jose, CA) managed the gold standard in the 200 medley relay (1:44.18).

Others that placed among the top two included: senior Matt Adams (Vista, CA) in the 3-meter (187.60) and the 1-meter (243.85), sophomore Jeff Parsons (Newark, CA) in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.68), Camp in the 500 freestyle (5:12.48), Zaggy in the 100 freestyle (50.08), junior Sonny Morin (Seattle, WA) in the 100 butterfly (57.12), sophomore Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) in the 50 freestyle (22.32) and senior Ned Voytovich (Salt Lake City, UT) in the 1000 freestyle (10:52.63).

Redlands (3-1, 3-0 SCIAC; 3-1, 3-0 SCIAC) takes to the road next week to face Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The diving portion of the meet is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. while the swimming portion of the meet will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16.
