Redlands Swimming & Diving Sweeps Cal Lutheran University

The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams took down Cal Lutheran University on Saturday at the Thompson Aquatic Center as the men and women downed the Kingsmen and Regals by respective scores of 159.5-76.5 and 182-57.

A slew of Bulldogs contributed to the Maroon and Gray’s success on the men’s side.

Senior Marc Hicks (Granada Hills, CA) kicked off the meet’s individual events, posting a 10:42.37 1000 freestyle for a decisive event win.

The 200 freestyle featured Redlands swimmers finishing first through fourth with sophomore Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA) leading the way with a 1:48.63 mark.

Taking on the 50 freestyle, junior John Floersch (San Jose, CA) touched the pads first, checking in at 22.13.

After Cal Lutheran’s Brendan Donahue mounted a comeback in the middle 100 of the 200 individual medley, freshman Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) split a 27.75 in his final 50 to ensure the 2:07.67 victory. Donahue, who swam the event exhibition, settled with a 2:07.70 time.

Freshman Will Houser (Woodinville, WA) edged his teammate, freshman Jesse Lieberman (Princeton, NJ), in the 200 butterfly, taking the event in 2:06.42.

Following a Whittier meet where he just missed the NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, sophomore Miran Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) continued on with his sprinting success with a 47.71 win in the 100 freestyle.

Finally, freshman Mike Grant (Weston, MA) paced the field in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 2:27.51 time.

Other strong performances came from sophomore Tim Sanders (Pasadena, CA) in the 1-meter (213.75) and 3-meter (181.25) diving events, Terzic in the 200 freestyle (1:49.99), freshman Michael Camp (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) in the 200 individual medley (2:11.91), Lieberman in the 200 butterfly (2:08.32), Harp in the 100 freestyle (47.95), junior Carlos Saldivar (San Jose, CA) in the 500 freestyle (5:14.60) and senior Matt Soriano (Fullerton, CA) in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.13).

In the women’s meet, sophomore Kat McIntosh (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), sophomore Michelle Camburn (Sunnyvale, CA) and sophomore Kelley Cooper (San Antonio, TX) each won two events.

McIntosh fired off a 26.06 50 freestyle, winning by .21, before blowing away the field in the 100 freestyle with a 56.43 showing. This marks the second consecutive dual meet that she has swept her individual events.

A relatively new face to Redlands’ distance corps, Camburn shined bright, picking up victories in the 200 freestyle (2:04.96) and the 500 freestyle (5:28.45).

Using her all-around stroke talents, Cooper took the 200 individual medley with a 2:18.99 time and led the event from start to finish. Later on in the meet, she engineered a Bulldog sweep of the 200 breaststroke, tapping in at 2:35.94.

Junior Melanie Loo (Waipahu, HI) dabbled with distance freestyle and fared well. She notched a solid first-place time of 11:27.81 in the 1000 freestyle, using a strong back half to ensure the win.

In the 200 backstroke, senior Hillary Nicholson (Santa Cruz, CA) provided the gold standard. Swimming evenly from the first 100 to the second 100, she gained a 2:16.18 mark.

Two different Bulldogs captured the diving events. Senior Jenna Lyons (Whittier, CA) garnered a 189.15 score in the 1-meter while freshman Dina Deresh (Newton, MA) nabbed the top spot in the 3-meter (175.30).
