The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams split
against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday at the Thompson Aquatic
Center with the men winning, 168-75, and the women falling just
short by a final of 110-130.
Sophomore Miran Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) gained an NCAA
“B” cut in the 50 freestyle, clocking a Thompson
Aquatic Center record time of 21.12. Later on in the meet, Terzic
headed a Redlands sweep in the 100 freestyle, winning the event
with a 47.48 standard. He is the first Bulldog swimmer to earn a
provisional cut time this season.
Against formidable competition in Pomona-Pitzer’s David
Hendrickson, sophomore Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA) prevailed,
checking in with a quick 16:44.70 time in the 1650 freestyle. The
two matched up again in the 500 freestyle, and Alders proved
victorious once more with a first-place performance of 4:58.11.
The Sagehens were unable to put a stop to freshman Will Houser
(Woodinville, WA) as the first-year student-athlete garnered the
top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:01.98) and the 200 breaststroke
(2:22.56).
A strong back half allowed freshman Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA)
to win the 200 freestyle (1:48.31) as he swam the final 50 yards of
the race in 26.27.
Redlands accounted for first in both of the diving events.
Sophomore Tim Sanders (Pasadena, CA) garnered the top place in the
3-meter (205.90) while junior Matt Adams (Vista, CA) snagged first
in the 1-meter (210.80).
In the 400 freestyle relay, Harp, senior Buddy Olds (Murrieta, CA),
junior John Floersch (San Jose, CA) and Terzic posted a 3:15.06
time, which earned the quartet a first-place finish.
Also faring well for the Bulldogs were freshman Steven Zarian
(Superior, CO) in the 200 freestyle (1:49.15), Floersch in the 50
freestyle (22.04), Alders in the 200 individual medley (2:05.71),
Adams in the 3-meter (200.75), Sanders in the 1-meter (160.10),
Harp in the 100 freestyle (48.32), junior Ian Starkie (Arroyo
Grande, CA) in the 500 freestyle (2:07.60) and senior Marc Hicks
(Granada Hills, CA) in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.56).
For the second year in a row, the Pomona-Pitzer women have had
Redlands’ number. Last season, the Bulldogs lost to the
Sagehens in the regular season dual meet before trumping them at
the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
Championships.
On the boards, senior Jenna Lyons (Whittier, CA) dominated her
competition, receiving first-place scores of 202.90 in the 1-meter
and 206.70 in the 3-meter.
Sophomore Kat McIntosh (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) touched first in the
50 freestyle (25.53), which gave the Maroon and Gray its first
event win on the women’s side of the meet.
The next event, the 200 individual medley, featured a solid matchup
between Sagehen superstar Naomi Laporte and freshman McKenzie
Nakamura (Kenmore, WA). Nakamura used a strong breaststroke leg to
gain the lead and held on to win with a 2:15.16 time.
Avenging a second-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, sophomore
Michelle Camburn (Sunnyvale, CA) separated herself from
Pomona-Pitzer’s Dana Kingman in the final 50 yards of the 500
freestyle and stopped the clock at a swift first-place time of
5:22.93.
With a spectacular back end, senior Hillary Nicholson (Santa Cruz,
CA) charged past the field in the 200 backstroke, covering the
eight-lap event in a season-best time of 2:12.41.
Redlands received second-place contributions from Camburn in the
1650 freestyle (18:23.03), freshman Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA)
in the 50 freestyle (25.58) and Nakamura in the 200 breaststroke
(2:32.60).
The Bulldogs (4-1, 4-0 SCIAC; 3-2, 3-1 SCIAC) continue on with
their SCIAC dual meet season tomorrow as they head to Eagle Rock to
face the Tigers of Occidental College. Diving starts at 10:30 p.m.
at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center while the swimming portion of the
meet will take place on Occidental’s campus at noon.
