No. 17 Redlands Softball Exits NCAA Tournament with Tough 3-5 Loss to Ninth-Ranked ETBU

The No. 17 University of Redlands softball team's exciting run at the Tyler Regional of the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships came to an end on Sunday with a 3-5 loss to ninth-ranked East Texas Baptist University.

The Tigers came out firing, racking up a four-run lead on four hits in the first inning.  Senior Lya Swaner provided the big hit of the frame, lacing a double to right center to plate two.

Redlands settled down and allowed one run over the next six stanzas.

In the top of the sixth the Maroon and Gray rallied to cut the deficit to three when senior center-fielder Sarah Beeman (Corona, CA) unleashed a two-run shot to plate junior second baseman Amanda Clark (Riverside, CA).  Clark led off the inning with her 25th hit-by-pitch of the season.

With senior pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) on first and two outs in the seventh, freshman right-fielder AJ Carrasco (Whittier, CA) stepped up with a run-scoring double to left center.  Following another hit-by-pitch for Clark, the inning came to an end on an infield ground-out, halting the comeback for the Bulldogs.

Uphold finished her career with a 25-10 record from the circle, striking out five and scattering eight hits against ETBU.  She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sophomore pitcher Shelby Parker recorded her second win over the Bulldogs in the tournament, dispersing six hits and fanning three in Sunday's performance.

In honor of their standout contributions, Beeman and Uphold both represented the Maroon and Gray on the NCAA Tyler Regional All-Tournament Team.

Redlands finished its 2013 campaign by tying the program record for wins in a season with a 36-12 mark en route to advancing to the third day of the regional tournament.
