Redlands Softball Dethrones Regals in SCIAC Doubleheader

The University of Redlands softball team took down Cal Lutheran University, the team to beat as of late in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), twice on Saturday as the Bulldogs posted scores of 13-5 and 3-2, respectively.

Redlands got its bats going early as the Bulldogs scored four runs on five hits. The team’s offense then spread runs across the next three innings, forcing the Regals into a mercy rule situation in the fifth inning.

Senior second baseman/shortstop Dory Baga (Aiea, HI) hit her second home run of the season with a two-run blast in the first and finished the first game a perfect 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBI.

Cal Lutheran’s pitchers could not find an answer to freshman catcher/third baseman Lindsay Henry (Lake Elsinore, CA) as she batted a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.

Despite coming up a home run short of the cycle, junior outfielder Kayla Peterson (San Jose, CA) dazzled. She knocked in an astounding six runs while batting 3-for-3.

Junior pitcher Olivia Ellis (Colfax, CA) tossed an excellent game from the mound for the Bulldogs, fanning five batters while allowing just one earned run in five innings of action.

The second game of the day proved tougher for the Bulldogs as the Regals rallied back from a two-run deficit and evened the score at two in the top of the sixth.

With the score still knotted at two, Redlands faced the task of ending the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior catcher Nicky Neumann (Fremont, CA) reached on an error by the second baseman, and then sophomore first baseman/outfielder Lizett Casillas (Pomona, CA) moved Neumann over with a single up the middle. Baga sacrificed herself to advance Casillas and Neumann, and Henry provided the heroics with a walk-off single to right field.

Offensively, Neumann offered the lone multi-hit game for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Ellis chalked up the win as the pitcher in the second game as well, going the distance with seven strikeouts.

Redlands (6-3, 4-2 SCIAC) travels to Eagle Rock on Saturday for a SCIAC doubleheader against the Tigers of Occidental College. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
