LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Water Polo team suffered a tough 14-12 loss on the road Saturday morning to the University of La Verne.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 5-20, 2-9 SCIAC, and finish with a split against the Leopards on the season. The last time these two programs matched up against each other UR won 20-14.
Nine goals were scored in the 1st Quarter with U of R holding the slight 5-4 advantage. First-year Spencer Clinton (Cypress, CA) got things going with the first two goals of the game and was followed by Drake Moody (Camarillo, CA) and Jack Everett (Westlake Village, CA) who moved the score to 4-2. ULV was able to battle back to tie things up with two of their own with :30 seconds to play, but with :12 seconds on the clock, Tor Cole (Malibu, CA) made a move inside drawing a 5-meter, which he would finish making it a one-score game.
This advantage stretched to two at the half following a 4-3 effort in the 2nd Quarter for the Maroon and Grey. S. Clinton again started off the scoring with a man-up connection but saw the Leos match the scoring tying things up at 6-6. Cole then put UR back on top with an even-strength goal with 4:04 to play and Austin Galanski (Bakersfield, CA) and S. Clinton would move the score to 9-7 at intermission.
In the second half, the offense was slow for the Bulldogs putting up three tallies and being outscored 7-3 as ULV would storm back to pull off the home victory. Moody and Galanski would keep the game a two-goal deficit on two different occasions in the 3rd Quarter. But over the final 4:14 the Leopards would mount their comeback putting up two that tied things up heading into the 4th.
They kept the momentum going over the final eight minutes adding the first two goals to go in front 13-11. S. Clinton ended the run denting the twine at the 4:12 mark, but that would be the only tally for UR in the frame as ULV would add one more, which proved enough insurance for them to pull off the victory.
S. Clinton led the offense with five goals, Cole, Moody, and Galanski each had two and Everett would tack on another.
The Bulldogs finished with 33 shots and a .364 shot percentage. They were 2-of-9 on power plays and converted one five-meter. Jason Gates (San Jose, CA) played all 32:00 between the posts with nine saves.
Redlands returns home to the Thompson Aquatic Center next Wednesday, October 3 when they host Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm.
