The University of Redlands men's water polo team competed in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday morning against the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens. In a game that flexed defensive prowess by allowing zero scores in the first half of the game, the Bulldogs turned around their offensive play to reel in a 5-2 victory on Senior Day.

Prior to the contest, the Bulldogs recognized seniors Nelson Glendinning (Philadelphia, PA), Jake Funk (Fremont, CA), and John Koning (Poway, CA) for their contributions to the water polo program.

The Maroon and Gray put together a solid defensive showing in the first two periods, keeping the Sagehens off the board. Unfortunately for Redlands, the Sagehens mimicked the home team's defensive efforts, which left the scoreboard blank through the opening two frames.

However, the Bulldogs charged back to net three goals in the third quarter. Junior driver Zac Polmanteer (Long Beach, CA) kicked off the scoring, followed by a goal each from sophomore center Matt Shippen (Santa Maria, CA) and Koning to make 3-2.

After allowing two Sagehen goals in the third period, the Bulldogs regained their defensive dominance in the fourth period to hold Pomona-Pitzer scoreless for the final eight minutes.

Redlands kept pressuring offensively, with sophomore center-driver Danny Hartwig (Vista, CA) finding the back of the net, while Shippen fired home his second score of the game en route to the hard-fought, 5-2 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Sekula (LaGrange, IL) was an instrumental part of the Bulldogs' success by notching 13 saves between the posts.

Redlands (12-12, 3-2 SCIAC) plays host to the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen on Wednesday, November 4, for a 4 p.m. game at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
