Redlands Men’s Tennis upsets No. 16 Mary Washington 5-4

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team picked up a hard fought 5-4 upset win over No. 18 University of Mary Washington Tuesday afternoon running their record to 2-1.

The Bulldogs were able to squeeze in the match with the Eagles and pulled out the win at the Verdieck Tennis Center taking two of three doubles before splitting singles action getting wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. 

Nils Plutat (Sauerlach, Bavaria, Germany) and Bryce Keim (Spartanburg, SC) got the Maroon and Grey off on the right foot rolling 8-1 at the top spot in doubles.  Stefan Hester (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and Michael Dudley (Baton Rouge, LA) paired up for the first time at No. 2, but would fall 8-2 allowing the Eagles to tie the match up.  The deciding point came at No. 3 from Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) and Luca Davidorf (Atlanta, GA) who pulled out an 8-5 win to put UR up 2-1.

Mary Washington created some pushback in singles taking the first point at No. 5 as Davydov would fall 6-2, 6-0.  The Eagles maintained this momentum picking up another point at No. 4 as Jack Mattox (Mercer Island, WA) would drop 6-1, 6-2 allowing UWM to go in front 3-2.  After that the Bulldogs stopped the run with Plutat sweeping his opponent at the top spot winning 6-3, 6-2 that leveled the match.  Keim followed with a straight sets win at No. 3 6-2, 6-3 and Hester would secure the match with a tight 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2, giving the Bulldogs the upset. 

Davidorf attempted to grab a sixth point for the U of R at No. 6 going the distance with his opponent battling from a set down only to fall 6-1, 2-6, 10-4. 

Redlands returns to the court this weekend, Friday-Sunday, March 3-5 in La Jolla, CA for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships.
