No. 13 U of R Men’s Tennis Captures 7-2 Win over No. 34 Cal Lutheran in Third-Place Match of SCIAC Championship Tournament

The No. 13 University of Redlands men's tennis team took care of business in Saturday's third-place match of the 2015 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament, downing the No. 34 Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen by a score of 7-2.  After sweeping the doubles matches, the Bulldogs prevailed in four of six singles matches to complete the conference season on a high note.

In doubles, the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Jake Ly (Torrance, CA) and freshman Joey Dulle (St. Louis, MO) got things started for the Bulldogs with an 8-5 performance.  Seniors Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) and Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) quickly followed suit at the top spot with a victory by the same score, before seniors Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) and Ted Burchett (Gold River, CA) completed the sweep with an 8-4 decision at No. 2.

With Lipscomb holding a 6-4, 2-1 advantage, the Bulldogs quickly took a 4-0 lead when his No. 1 opponent had to retire.

In addition, Cummins impressed at No. 2 by dismissing his counterpart, 6-2, 6-0, to officially clinch the Maroon and Gray's victory.

With the triumph already in the books, Redlands also garnered quality wins from Dulle at No. 5 (6-2, 7-5) and Leahy at No. 6 (3-6, 6-2, 10-5).

While combining their dual-match results with their tournament finish, the Bulldogs (17-8, 8-2 SCIAC) officially tied for second in the conference standings.  Redlands now looks forward to Monday, May 4, when the NCAA will announce whether or not the team earns an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
