The University of Redlands men's tennis team put together a solid showing at the 2014 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Regional Championships in Claremont on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with senior Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) headlining the results with his semifinal appearance in the singles draw.

Lipscomb came out firing on Friday, taking down Oliver Seifert of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the first round by scores of 6-2, 6-3.  He continued to gain success in the second round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ian Slater of Cal Lutheran University, before cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 performance over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' Kalyan Chadalavada on Saturday.  In the quarterfinals, Lipscomb knocked off familiar foe Skyler Butts from CMS in a 7-6(6), 6-2 showing.  While competing against CMS' Nik Marino, who was seeded second in the event, Lipscomb came up short in a tight 7-5, 6-3 decision during Sunday's semifinal.

Beyond Lipscomb, Redlands gained four first-round winners in the singles draw.  While making his collegiate debut, freshman Joey Dulle (St. Louis, MO) topped Troy Chavez of Whittier College, 6-1, 6-4.  Senior Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) also came away with a straight-set victory, defeating Andrew Tufenkian of CLU by scores of 6-4, 6-1.

Furthermore, sophomores Parker Wilson (Carlsbad, CA) and Jake Ly (Torrance, CA) advanced to the third round of the tournament with a pair of wins each.  With a thrilling, three-set upset, Ly knocked off No. 9-seeded Connor Hudson of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, before rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Whittier's David Stanko.  Finally, Wilson recorded back-to-back wins in two sets by defeating Gio Valdez of CLU, 6-1, 6-2, and Caltech's Sawthwick Pathireddy, 6-3, 6-0.

In the consolation bracket, seniors Max Licona (Los Angeles, CA) and Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) earned solid wins by scores of 6-1, 6-1, and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.

In doubles action, sophomore Tom Suchodolski (Amherst, MA) and Jones teamed up for a third-round appearance. They defeated a duo from CMS, 8-3, before taking down a tandem from UC Santa Cruz in an 8-1 rout.  Lipscomb and Leahy also provided solid results in doubles with a first-round victory over a team from UCSC and an 8-3 victory against a Pomona-Pitzer duo.

With the fall portion of the competitive season now complete, Redlands looks forward to hosting the annual alumni match on January 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. on Verdieck Courts.
