Redlands Tennis Programs Receive Academic Honors from ITA

It was announced earlier this week that the men's and women's tennis programs at the University of Redlands landed among the best academically in Division III, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Open to any ITA program with a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above, the ITA All-Academic Team award was given to both Bulldog programs.

With an overall GPA of 3.233, the men ranked among 34 other institutions to gain this distinction for 2010. Their total included grades form 13 letter-winners, all of whom competed in at least one varsity match.

The women joined the company of 53 academically successful schools by carrying a team GPA of 3.2, which included the contributions of 13 players.

In addition, five men and three Redlands women garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, which requires that the player be a varsity letter-winner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

For the men, freshman Darren Dahl (Westlake Village, CA), sophomore Michael Jacobson (Chicago, IL), junior Lander Jewett (Helena, MT), freshman Kevin Kosanke (Bellevue, WA), and freshman Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) met the standard for this award.

On the women's side, seniors Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO), Carrie McCann (McMinnville, OR), and Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) gained this academic recognition from the ITA.

The Bulldog men (15-11, 6-3 SCIAC) finished out the 2010 campaign with a national ranking of 16 and took third in a top-heavy Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).

Redlands women's tennis (13-10, 8-2 SCIAC) advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th time 11 years, garnering a final national ranking of 23.

In less than one month, the Bulldog teams have garnered academic honors in seven different programs.
