SCIAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Preview: No. 4 Cal Lutheran vs. No. 5 University of Redlands

SCIAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Preview: No. 4 Cal Lutheran vs. No. 5 University of Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team finished the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular season tied with California Lutheran University (CLU) and Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) for third place with a .600-win percentage. But due to a pair of losses in the head-to-head match-ups they dropped to the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament.

The SCIAC turned to win percentage over traditional points because each team was going to play a different number of contests because Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) had their season canceled mid-way through the conference schedule and not every team had played them, or played them the same number of times, so awarding points were not considered fair for all teams. Win percentage was then selected to determine the final standings to reward teams who had consistently won their games as opposed to getting draws. The SCIAC Tournament was also expanded to six teams in order to try and balance the opportunities for NCAA Tournament Qualification considering the entire schedule was not completed.

Following the seeding, the Bulldogs will travel to No. 4 Cal Lutheran tonight, Tuesday, November 1 with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

The winner of the game will face either No. 1 Chapman University or No. 2 Occidental College on the road this Friday, November 4.

(Box score | Recap)

The Bulldogs and Kingsmen played only once during the regular season. Redlands lost that matchup on the road 1-0 back on September 24. The Maroon and Grey won a majority of the main categories including shots 17-13 and corner kicks 14-6. The biggest factor, though, was the fouls. The two sides combined for 41 fouls and five yellow cards, leading to a choppy run-of-play.

Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) and Jamie Dulle (Clayton, MO) each had three shots and Kovach added two shots on-goal. Nico Mancilla (Pasadena, CA) took two shots and put both on frame, but all of the Bulldogs' five shots on-goal were saved. In goal Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) played the full 90:00 minutes and made three saves as the Kingsmen earned just four shots on-goal, with the game-winner finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute.

Some prior season history includes an undefeated record against the Kingsmen in 2021, where UR posted a 2-0-1 record.

Redlands

The Bulldogs are the reigning 2021 SCIAC Tournament Champions and earn a spot in the SCIAC Postseason for the 14th Time, which includes five titles.  Heading into Tuesday night the Maroon and Grey have won three in a row and five of their last six outscoring their opponents 17-4 during this stretch, which includes a 13-2 margin over the last three games.

Redlands concluded the regular season 7-5-3, 6-4 SCIAC.  This season UR had four players earn SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors, including Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA), Peyton Menti (Seattle, WA), Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA), and Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA).

In conference the Bulldogs lead in Goals Scored (26), Assists (24), and Corner Kicks (69).  They are No. 2 in Shot Percentage (.176) and Shots Per Game (14.8).  They then rank No. 3 in Shots on Goal (77).  Lawrence leads the defensive unit after making four saves in a shutout victory against conference regular season champion Chapman University. The junior ended the regular season with one solo and three partial shutouts, having recorded the fourth-lowest goals-against average in the conference.  He totaled 51 saves on the year, has a .761 Save Percentage with a 1.24 Goals Against Average.

Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) will be the one to watch offensively as he comes in with six goals on the season, four of which came within conference.  He ranks No. 3 in SCIAC in goals scored, No. 5 in Shots (23) and No. 9 in Points (8).  He is surrounded by Phillip Kostenko (Zelenokumsk, Russia) and Jamie Dulle (Clayton, MO) who each have four goals apiece with Dulle also providing a couple of assists.  Menti runs the backline with an incredible group of Darwen, Jacob Sattler (Pasadena, CA), Yusef Mayet (Redondo Beach, CA) and Teddy Rubenstein (Waikoloa Village, Hawaii).  Menti has four assists on the year and this backline has a 1.20 goals against average and limiting opponents to a .099 shot percentage.
