U of R Men's Soccer Earns Six All-SCIAC Selections

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer program has been recognized by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) with six selections to the All-Conference first and second teams. The selections include five first team members: Arian MoghareiMikey FlotaSteve AcuñaCollin ChubbFertal, Ethan Kovach, and one second team member: Peyton Menti

Mogharei, a senior midfielder from Hayward, Calif., was named 1st Team All-SCIAC and was named the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year.  What a year he has had playing and starting in all 16 matches for the Bulldogs, while helping them record six shutouts and a goal against average (GAA) of 1.11 during the 2021 season. The six shutouts are the second most in the SCIAC, as is their GAA.  Mogharei was also a big part of the UR offensive attack finishing the regular season with four goals and three assists. 

Along the back line for the Bulldogs is Flota, a graduate defender from West Covina, Calif. He earns 1st Team All-SCIAC accolades for the first time in his career, after landing on the 2nd Team in 2019.  He played and started in all 16 matches during 2021 and contributed an assist with eight shots, four of which were on-goal. His assist came on the game-winning goal at Pomona-Pitzer when he found Acuña for the winning tally. 

Joining Mogharei in the midfield is senior Acuña from Pico Rivera, Calif. He has now been a 1st Team All-SCIAC performer in back-to-back years.  He played in 13 matches with 11 starts. He had three goals and an assist with two game-winning goals for the Bulldogs. One of those game-winning goals came in a 4-3 win at Pomona-Pitzer when he scored in the 89th minute. 

ChubbFertal, a graduate senior from Eugene, Ore., was named to the first team as a forward after scoring a career-high 11 goals which is good for second most among players in the SCIAC. He now has 25 goals in his career which ties him for 12th most all-time with Sam Mirkovich who scored 25 times from 2001-04. It also puts him only three behind his older brother Casey ChubbFertal who scored 28 times from 2014-17. Amongst his 11 goals, four of them were game winners, the biggest one coming against La Verne when he scored in overtime in the 98th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win.

The fifth member of the All-SCIAC first team is Kovach. He is a junior forward from Las Vegas, Nev. He found the back of the net four times, but it was his six assists that helped to take the Bulldogs offense to another level. The six assists tied him atop the SCIAC and also attacked the goal with 40 shots, the third most within the conference. 

Helping the Bulldogs to the second-best overall scoring defense in SCIAC was 2nd Team All-SCIAC member Menti, a senior from Seattle, Wash. He has now been named to the All-SCIAC team for the second straight year being recognized on the 1st Team All-SCIAC in 2019.  This season Menti scored once, and it was the lone goal for Bulldogs in a 2-1 road loss against first place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS). He had 13 shots with four of them on-target during 2021.

The Bulldogs continue their quest to make the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships with a semifinal match at Farquhar Field against Cal Lutheran (CLU) on Wednesday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. The winner of the contest will play the winner of the No.1 seed Claremont-M-S and the No. 4 seed Chapman match that will be played Wednesday as well. If CMS wins the match, then the championship match will be at CMS on Saturday, November 6 and if Chapman wins it will be the same date but at the winner of the Redlands vs. CLU match.
