No. 2 Redlands vs. No. 3 Cal Lutheran

The University of Redlands finished the regular season with a 13-2-1, 9-2-1 SCIAC record.  The Maroon and Grey have now earned a berth into the SCIAC Tournament for the 13th time, which includes four titles.  Heading into the semi-finals the Bulldogs have won four in a row and have gone 10-1-1 over their past 12 games.  During the season UR has held Division III National Rankings according to the United Soccer Coaches Association at No. 5, No. 19, and No. 23 along with receiving votes in the d3soccer.com polls.

Four players this season have earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors, including Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA), Matt Beasley (Las Vegas, NV), Arian Mogharei (Hayward, CA), and Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR).  The Bulldogs lead the conference in goals scored (44), assists (31), points (117), and shots per game (17.8), and currently sit second in goals allowed (17), goals against average (1.11), and shutouts (6).  In the SCIAC Statistical Categories, Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) has six assists (No. 1) and 40 shots (No. 3), Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) with five assists (No. 2), and ChubbFertal with 11 goals (No. 2), 22 points (No. 2), and 39 shots (No. 5).

Defensively, the Bulldogs look to graduate student Mogharei who was named the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year after helping U of R tally four clean sheets, while logging six points on the strength of two goals and two assists.  Redlands also looks to their goalkeeping tandem of Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) with seven goals against (No. 2), a .774 save percentage (No. 3), and a 1.17 goals against average (No. 3), while Lawrence boasts an .818 save percentage (No. 2), eight goals against (No. 3), and a 0.86 goals against average (No. 2).

In the head-to-head against the Kingsmen this season Redlands is 1-0-1.  They finished in a draw 1-1 back on September 25 and most recently UR came away with the 2-0 shutout on October 16.

For Cal Lutheran, they come in with a 10-6-2, 7-4-1 SCIAC record.  Christian Gonzalez leads the offense with four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points. The Kingsmen have seen a balanced offense as 11 more players have scored. Jackson Endsley, Matt Myers and Giovanni Torres each have three and JP Melgoza and Chris Pelaez have each added two. Palaez is tied with Gonzalez for the team-high three assists.

Ivan Lumbrano has started 17 games in goal. He has a goals-against-average of 1.18 while allowing just 19 goals on the season. He has combined with defensive players, Nick Bryant, Preston Fleming, Ryan Fraye, Cameron Korshavn, Erick Mejia, Caleb Merrill and Tyler Sherard for five shutouts.

No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. No. 4 Chapman University

In the other semi-final, the top-seeded Stags of CMS, who claimed the regular season SCIAC Championship come in with a 13-1-3, 10-0-2 SCIAC mark and will host Chapman University who claimed the No. 4 seed with an 8-7, 7-4 SCIAC record.  The last time a CMS team has gone undefeated within the SCIAC regular season was back in 1993.

Eduardo De Anda is the anchor on the defensive unit for CMS currently ranking sixth in the nation with a 0.38 goals against average for the Stags, tallying eight shutouts and a 12-0-3 record this season. He has a career record of 21-1-4, with his only career defeat coming in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2019.

Samay Rahim has quarterbacked a defense that hasn't allowed more than one goal in any game this year. CMS ranks third in the nation with a 0.39 team goals against average.

On the offensive side of things for CMS Harper Rubin returned to the team this year after missing the 2019 season (and the 2020 season due to COVID) and had a huge impact, scoring six goals.  He is joined by Justin Blachman who also had six goals this season, breaking through after hitting the woodwork several times as a first-year before finally getting his first goal in a SCIAC win over Whittier.

Chapman will lean on SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year Aidan Wall who led the Panthers and SCIAC with 10 goals and 20 points in league action during the 2021 campaign, highlighted by six game-winning goals. The senior from Redwood City, Calif. registered a hat trick in a 4-1 win over La Verne on September 25 and added two-goal games against Caltech (October 6) and Redlands (October 13).

Defensively they will rely on sophomore Treyden Buder-Nakasone who anchors the defense that has produced five shutouts, has a 1.80 goals against average, all while holding opponents to a .141 shot percentage.
