No. 23 Bulldogs score twice in final three minutes to beat Sagehens 4-3

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team handed Pomona-Pitzer their first loss within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday night scoring twice in the final ten minutes to pull off the 4-3 road victory.

The Bulldogs improve to 6-1-1, 3-1-1 SCIAC and have now gone 3-0-1 over their past four games, while Pomona-Pitzer drops to 5-2, 3-1 SCIAC.

The Maroon and Grey got on the scoreboard first in the 23rd minute from Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR)Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA) ripped a shot in the box, which was blocked.  It made its way to Jamie Dulle (St. Louis, MO) on the end line who then served a left footed ball finding Chubb Fertal's head for the tap in.

But the Sagehens responded right before the half getting the game-tying goal from Alex Bonville finishing a cross from Jeffrey Tiglon.  Out of the break PP took their first lead coming in the 52nd minute capitalizing on a UR turnover.  The Sagehens found Kyle Lau in space who beat his defender before slotting a shot near post moving the score to 2-1.

This lead though wouldn't hold as the Bulldogs would tie things up four minutes later again from ChubbFertal.  Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) played a direct ball from the left side that found the chest of ChubbFertal in the box.  He then took a touch and blasted a shot low into the back of the net.

Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead in the 63rd minute as Bonville found the back of the net off of a cross from Matthew Carlson.  This moved the score to 3-2, giving them a lead they thought would be enough.  But in the final three minutes Redlands continued to push forward crowding the box and drawing a foul.  This would lead to a set piece by UR where Kovach would serve a free kick to Matt Beasley (Las Vegas, NV) who touched it into the goal from the far side sending the game into a deadlock.

But the Maroon and Grey weren't done coming down a minute later and adding the eventual game winner at the 88:51 mark from Steve Acuña (Pico Rivera, CA).  Kovach played a ball wide to Mikey Flota (West Covina, CA) on the right side who then curled a ball into the box finding the head of Acuña back post for the win.

Redlands finished with 11 shots for the game, eight of which were on frame.  They did hold the advantage on corner kicks with seven and totaled four saves two coming in each half for both Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) and Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA).

ChubbFertal finished with three shots, two of which were goals, Acuña added two shots, which included the game winner and Kovach put up two shots along with a pair of assists.

Redlands continues with their busy week remaining on the road this Saturday, October 2 traveling to take on Whittier College beginning at 7:00pm.
