Men’s Soccer proves tough test for Oglethorpe in 5-1 victory

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team remains hot as they rolled to the 5-1 victory over Oglethorpe University Sunday evening at Farquhar Field.

The Maroon and Grey have now won three in a row, have outscored their opponents 12-2, averaging 4.00 goals per game and allowing just a 0.67 goals against average.

For the second straight game the Bulldogs started quickly getting a pair of shots off from Chad Feingold (Los Gatos, CA) at 7:14 and 8:46.  But the Stormy Petrels answered getting looks on frame from Logan Llano forcing Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) into two save opportunities.  Then in the 23rd minute graduate student Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) would finally break through for UR.  Avery Jacobson (Seattle, WA) found a pass to ChubbFertal's feet, 40 yards out.  Collin turned and proceeded to take on the backline himself beating two defenders and finishing.

This 1-0 lead wouldn't hold though as Oglethorpe would come down a minute later and would add the equalizer from Fernando Guevara.  He was at the right place at the right time.  Abraham Lopez for the Stormy Petrels was able to get off a shot from just outside the box, which was saved by McSweeny.  He wasn't able to hold onto though as it would bounce away right to the feet of Guevara who would finish.

But this wouldn't deter the Bulldogs as they would bounce back with the eventual game winner in the 40th minute from Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA). Arian Mogharei (Hayward, CA) played a perfect through ball in behind the back-line to Richards who was able to chase it down before flipping it up and over the head of the oncoming keeper.  This would move the score to 2-1 heading into the break and the Maroon and Grey wouldn't look back.

Six minutes out of the break ChubbFertal returned to add his second of the game.  Peyton Menti (Seattle, WA) put in a nice diagonal ball wide to Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) who then sized up a defender before taking him on the dribble.  Parra then served in a nice cross to Collin who caught it perfectly on a side volley before smashing the finish to the left side of the net, proving to be the goal of the season thus far!

After that UR continued to pressure making it difficult for Oglethorpe to even get into their offensive half.  This opened up more opportunities for the Maroon and Grey as they would tack on their fourth goal of the game in the 85th minute.  Paetin Nelson (Portland, OR) crossed a long ball from the right side that found Nicolas Mancilla (Pasadena, CA) on the far side of the Oglethorpe box.  Mancilla touched it towards the end line and served a left footed cross that found the feet of Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV).  Kovach then took a settling touch before ripping a left footed shot to the near post.

Then with just :20 seconds to play UR would find the back of the goal for a fifth time.  The Oglethorpe keeper played a poor ball that fell to the feet of Jonathan Cheung (Hong Kong, China).  Cheung then took a touch to his left and slipped a pass to Mancilla inside the box.  Mancilla then opened his hip and curled a finish to the far post for his first career tally.

Redlands outshot Oglethorpe 20-17, but was edged on corner kicks 6-5.  McSweeny finished with four saves in the first half collecting the win, while Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) played the final 45:00 minutes perfect with three stops.

Redlands (3-0) returns to the pitch Wednesday, September 15 when they open up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on the road against No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Game time set for 7:00pm.
