Redlands Men's Soccer Powers past Whitworth 4-0

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team continues to remain hot as they cruised to the lopsided 4-0 victory over Whitworth University Friday night at Farquhar Field.

The Bulldogs improve now to 2-0 and have outscored their last two opponents 7-1.

Redlands wasted little time getting their offense going as Steve Acuña (Pico Rivera, CA) would get a great look on frame in the 11th minute.  But his header in the box would hit off the post keeping the game scoreless.  UR continued to provide the offense soon after with Avery Jacobson (Seattle, WA) and Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) both getting shots off and forcing Pirate keeper Bo Broyles into a couple of save opportunities.

But it wouldn't be until the 23rd minute when the Bulldogs would connect.  Jacobson and Mikey Flota (West Covina, CA) worked to stop a Whitworth counter attack at midfield.  Flota then connected to Kovach' feet 30 yards out, which he then took at the defense slipping a pass through to Acuna on the left side of the box.  Acuna would then slot a left footed shot to the bottom right corner from 12-yards out.

Fourteen minutes later UR added to their lead this time from Arian Mogharei (Hayward, CA) who muscled his way through a challenge on the edge of Whitworth's box.  He then played it to Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA) who combined with him, slipping a nice through ball right onto the pk spot where Mogharei would finish.

Out of the half, Redlands continued to add to their lead putting up another two insurance goals.  They got three quick strikes within the opening ten minutes before finding the back of the net at the 59:58 mark.  Kovach collected the ball on the right side from a Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) throw-in.  He beat a defender on the line and drove inside on a dynamic dribble towards the top of the box before firing off a left footed strike to the keepers near post.

But the Maroon and Grey weren't done adding to their lead as they would add the final tally with under :20 seconds to play from Jamie Dulle (St. Louis, MO)Taye Adams (Henderson, NV) intercepted a pass from the Whitworth backline before playing it to Jonathan Cheung (Hong Kong, China).  Cheung then carried the ball centrally across the Pirates box before playing Dulle to his left who finished far post.

Redlands finished with 21 shots for the game, which included 15 on frame.  Acuna, Phillip Kostenko (Sammamish, WA), and Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) each took three shots and were joined by Mogharei, Jacobson, Kovach, and Dulle who each added a pair.

Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) and Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) combined for the shutout victory each playing 45:00 minutes between the posts.  Lawrence posted four stops in the first half and McSweeney with another.

Redlands has a short turnaround as they look forward to a non-conference match-up with Oglethorpe on Sunday, September 12 at 5:00pm.
