After a nearly two-week layoff from competition, the University of Redlands men's soccer team gained a 2-1 victory over the visiting Roadrunners of the College of the Desert on Friday night. Junior midfielder Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) netted both goals for the Bulldogs in an out-of-division match on Farquhar Field.

ChubbFertal began his strong showing early with a header in the fifth minute of the match. He leaped over the defense to connect on a well-placed corner kick from sophomore midfielder Avery Jacobson (Seattle, WA) to beat the Roadrunners' goalkeeper for the first score of the game.

However, less than three minutes later, COD answered with the equalizer on a solid score from the top of the box to make it 1-1 early in the match.

Redlands continued its barrage of attempts when Jacobson unleashed consecutive shots on net that were saved by the Roadrunners' goalkeeper in the 12th minute.

Following back-and-forth action, the Bulldogs' strongest attempt of the first half came from sophomore midfielder Steve Acuña (Pico Rivera, CA), who just missed to the right of the net inside the box with a little over 10 minutes left on the clock.

In the second half, first-year midfielder Nicolas Mancilla (Pasadena, CA) checked into the match in the 66th minute and nearly scored less than two minutes later. After a savvy move, he struck the ball at the top of the box, but his attempt hit the right post. However, the Bulldogs' pressure paid off when the Roadrunners were called for a foul inside the box, rewarding the Maroon and Gray with a penalty kick in the final two minutes of action. ChubbFertal rose to the occasion and ripped a shot to the back of the net for the game-winner, which marked his second tally of the contest.

Overall, the Bulldogs out-shot the Roadrunners, 19-6, and also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Tonight's match does not count towards the Maroon and Gray's overall record or statistics, as it is against a junior college opponent.

Redlands (0-2-0) competes against the University of St. Thomas (MN) on Sunday, September 15, at 11 a.m. on Farquhar Field.
