The University of Redlands men's soccer program suffered its first regular-season Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) defeat since October 20, 2010, falling to the University of La Verne, 1-2, in double overtime on Wednesday.  The loss leaves the Bulldogs in second place in the conference standings with 10 SCIAC matches remaining.

Although the Maroon and Gray allowed a goal just four minutes after the opening whistle, the Bulldogs responded quickly by tying the game at the 15:02 mark. Senior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA) whipped in a corner kick to the back post, where junior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) headed the ball back across the goal to find senior forward Alex Laughton (Pleasanton, CA), who finished with a well-placed header of his own.  The netter was Laughton's second on the season.

Redlands went on to out-shoot the Leopards, 19-11, in regulation, but couldn't find the all-important second goal.

A back-and-forth, first extra period ensued with neither squad breaking through, but the second overtime wasn't as friendly to the Bulldogs.  In the 106th minute, Leopard freshman midfielder Michael Reed (San Diego, CA) scored the golden goal to give La Verne its second SCIAC win of the season.

Redlands (3-3-3, 3-1-2 SCIAC) takes a break from conference action on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to UC Santa Cruz.  Kickoff with the longtime west-region rival is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
