U of R Men's Soccer Captures 1-1 Tie with Chapman in SCIAC Action

The University of Redlands men's soccer team took on Chapman University in the teams' inaugural Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meeting, earning a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action on Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless opening half, the Bulldogs struck first when sophomore midfielder Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) found junior defender Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) on a corner-kick play in the 64th minute. While connecting on his first netter of the season, Marquez became the Maroon and Gray's eighth goal-scorer of the young season.

However, the Bulldogs' celebration lasted only a few minutes, as Chapman took advantage of a Redlands foul at the 70:20-mark.  Senior forward Mauricio Alfonso (Woodland Hills, CA) converted a direct kick for the Panther equalizer.

As the squads battled fearlessly through two overtime periods, they both created their fair share of chances, but to no avail; the rivals each escaped with the tie.

Redlands finished the night with a slight shot advantage with 20 attempts, compared to Chapman's 19. Senior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA) led the Maroon and Gray attack with four total shots, including two on frame.  Mauricio headed up the Panther offense with eight attempts.

The Bulldogs (2-2-2, 2-0-1 SCIAC) remain as the only unbeaten team in the SCIAC, sitting second behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the standings. Redlands hosts the 3-1 Stags in Saturday's 1 p.m. contest on Farquhar Field.
