The University of Redlands men's soccer team allowed two unanswered goals after taking an early lead, resulting in a 1-2 loss to the Southwestern University (TX) Pirates. Despite outshooting Southwestern, 25-14, on a warm afternoon at Farquhar Field, the Bulldogs only tallied six shots on target, while the Pirates totaled the same mark.
Following some good chances early on for Redlands, senior forward Alex Laughton (Pleasanton, CA) gave the Bulldogs the lead when he headed in a free-kick cross from senior midfielder Nick Eary (Las Vegas, NV) in the 30th minute. With the goal, Laughton became the seventh different goal-scorer for the Maroon and Gray during the 2012 campaign.
The Pirates equalized late in the first half when junior midfielder Marco Alcocer (Pflugerville, TX) tapped in a cross from senior forward Evan Perkins (Keller, TX). Southwestern scored its second netter of the game when sophomore midfielder Zach Faulkner (Rowlett, TX) found freshman midfielder Charlie Berndt (Austin, TX) for another tap-in with just 23 minutes remaining in the second half.
While the Bulldogs pushed the tempo of the game to try and find the tying goal, they were unable to break down the Pirate defense.
Redlands (2-2-1) looks to rebound from this disappointing defeat on Wednesday, September 19, when it takes to the road for the first time this season and facies off against Chapman University. The match will also be the first-ever Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game between the two programs after the Panthers became eligible to compete in the conference as of this school year. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
