The No. 13/15 University of Redlands men's soccer team rattled off its third hat trick against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges this season, taking down the Stags by a score of 3-0 on Sunday to advance to the third round of the NCAA Championships. With the win, the Bulldogs extend their unbeaten streak to 19 consecutive games.
The U of R went on the offensive attack early and often, lighting up the scoreboard less than three minutes into the game. Senior forward Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) made a quick run along the CMS sideline before getting tackled in the box to set up a Bulldog penalty kick. Junior defender Nick Eary (Las Vegas, NV) crushed his shot into the back-right netting for his fifth goal of the season.
Less than 30 minutes later, local Redlands product freshman forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA) came off the bench to provide the Bulldogs' second score. Sophomore midfielder Will Walker (Folsom, CA) fed a tight pass to Izydorek before the rookie ripped a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the Stags' net. After netting three goals in the last four games, Izydorek leads the team with 15 goals in his first year with the Bulldogs.
The feel of the game started to change in the second half with the teams going back-and-forth at one another, trading shot for shot.
Junior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA) silenced the Stags for good by striking home one final dagger in the 84th minute. Senior forward Jamie Griffin (Seattle, WA) placed a perfect left cross into the middle of the box where Ramirez connected for his fifth score of the 2011 campaign.
In the Bulldogs' cage, sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) preserved the complete-game shutout with five saves, including a big-time, high punch-out late in the second half.
Redlands outshot CMS, 18-14, while staying even in the corner-kick department with three apiece.
