Despite sustaining two red cards, the University of Redlands
men’s soccer team pulled out a 3-2 victory against the
University of La Verne on Saturday afternoon in La Verne.
After trailing, 0-2, at the half, the Bulldogs produced three
unanswered goals in the second frame.
Taylor Hart opened scoring for the Leopards in the 14th minute, and
Ruben Trujillo found the back of the net at the 34-minute mark to
give the host team a 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore midfielder Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) converted on a
corner kick that was taken by junior defender Danny Connors (Lake
Oswego, OR) at 53:47, cutting La Verne’s lead in half.
The Bulldogs received their first red card at the 78-minute mark.
Despite playing a man down, senior forward Nick Gundersen (Park
City, UT) scored by means of a penalty kick three minutes later to
even the tally at two apiece.
Finally, after the Maroon and Gray sustained its second red card at
83:01, senior defender Andrew Lazarz (Sammamish, WA) buried the
game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Redlands held the upper hand in shots, 13-9, and also earned six
corner kicks to La Verne’s four.
Senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) pulled out the
victory in between the pipes for the Maroon and Gray, notching two
saves. Ryan Thompson was the tough-luck loser in goal for the
Leopards, stopping eight shots while allowing three scores.
La Verne (4-15, 4-10 SCIAC) finishes the season ranked sixth in the
conference standings.
Redlands (9-6-4, 8-3-3 SCIAC) holds the No. 3 seed in the Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason
Tournament and will face Whittier College on Wednesday. This
match match will be contested on Whittier’s Donald E.
Graham Field at a time to be determined. The Poets bested the
Bulldogs, 2-1, in overtime in their initial meeting on Sept. 16 and
played Redlands to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 10.
