Bulldog Men’s Soccer Settles for Draw against Whittier

The University of Redlands men’s soccer team drew with Whittier College on Saturday afternoon in Redlands as the match remained tied, 1-1, after 110 minutes of action.

For the first 86 minutes, stellar goalkeeping prevailed as neither team could put a point on the board. Senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) thwarted the Poets’ attempt to score in the 23rd minute as Srdan Jovanovic ripped a header toward the Bulldog goal. Hobson batted the ball away to preserve the clean sheet, and it ultimately served as the defining play for the Maroon and Gray up to that point.

Redlands finally reaped the rewards of its shot production in the 86th minute as senior defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA) clanged the crossbar on a shot attempt, setting senior forward Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT) up for a perfect look. Gundersen redirected the come-backer back toward the Poet goal, and Whittier’s goalkeeper, Michael Read, could not make the stop.

Whittier had the ball in the waning seconds, trying desperately to equalize the tally. D.J. Covarrubias chipped a shot from the far right wing with 15 ticks remaining on the clock. Hobson positioned himself for a routine save but struggled to maintain possession of the shot. The ball wound up dropping in front of Hobson, and Edward Baker capitalized, tapping a shot into the unmanned goal to tie the match with 10 seconds left.

Both teams fought hard to end the contest in the overtime periods, but neither could generate the game-winning goal.

Hobson was credited with four saves in between the pipes for the Maroon and Gray while Read stopped six attempts protecting the Poet net.

Whittier (5-4-2, 4-2-2 SCIAC) holds onto its one-point lead over Redlands for third in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings with the result.

Redlands (5-6-2, 4-3-1 SCIAC) travels to Eagle Rock on Wednesday to square off against the Tigers of Occidental College at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs took down Occidental, 3-1, when they met on Sept. 19.
