Neither the University of Redlands nor Occidental College scored
for 62 minutes in the Oct. 25 match between the two men’s
soccer squads. Both teams poured on offense in the final 30 minutes
of the game and ended with a 5-1 score.
Senior midfielder Bryan Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA) scored at the
62:15 mark unassisted, putting the Bulldogs on the board 1-0.
In 2:07, Redlands scored three goals. In the 82nd minute, senior
midfielder Steve Chenes (Las Vegas, NV) netted a goal before senior
forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) and senior forward Alex Parker
(Chula Vista, CA) each contributed scores of their own at the 84:30
and 84:58 marks, respectively. Tallying the only assist of the
match for the maroon and gray, sophomore midfielder Gilbert Flores
(Woodlake, CA) provided the feed for Schunk’s goal.
Occidental’s Gilberto Ortega connected on a shot in the 89th
minute, but freshman midfielder Jamie Griffin (Seattle, WA) came
off the bench and responded with a goal that he scored just 40
seconds left in regulation.
Junior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) picked up the win in
goal, stopping three shots and allowing just one goal. For the
Tigers, Alex Comb saved seven shots and surrendered five goals.
Redlands (13-4-1, 11-0-1 SCIAC) clinched the Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title on Wednesday,
Oct. 22 and look to build upon its momentum on Wednesday as it
hosts Cal Lutheran University at 7 p.m. Before the start of the
match, the Bulldogs will honor their five seniors for senior night.
