Senior Ross Schunk Nets Hat Trick, Leads Redlands Men’s Soccer over Sagehens

Senior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) scored three goals in the second half and got two points closer to making history again as the University of Redlands men’s soccer team outperformed Pomona-Pitzer Colleges by a 3-1 final.

The Sagehens opened scoring in the 40th minute as Evan Munos took a shot from the left wing and scored after Zach Burke took a free kick, giving Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Schunk evened the score in the 61st minute after dribbling down the offensive third of the field, netting his ninth goal of the season. A timely pass from sophomore midfielder Gilbert Flores (Woodlake, CA) allowed Schunk to find an opening again in the 73rd minute firing off a shot across the box and into the right-hand corner of the net.

He sealed the hat-trick performance by uncorking a monster shot to the bottom left-hand corner of the goal off of a pass by junior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA), which gave him 124 points on his storied Bulldog career.

His next assist will be one for the ages as it will tie him with the program’s all-time points leader, Adam Acosta ’05. A goal, which is worth two points, will give him the necessary boost to overtake Acosta’s team record.

Junior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) provided a solid outing in goal, saving six shots of seven taken on goal. Pomona-Pitzer’s Charlie Balter made six saves as well but allowed all three Bulldog goals.

In addition, the maroon and gray held the shot (28-19) and the corner kick advantage (6-2).

With the win, the Bulldogs sit comfortably in first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings with 22 points. After an upset victory this afternoon, the University of La Verne sits in a three-way tie for second with Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges with 14 points.

Redlands travels to Pasadena on Wednesday, Oct. 15 to face Caltech in a SCIAC match at 4 p.m.
