Senior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) capitalized on a
corner kick by senior midfielder Bryan Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA),
scoring his 51st career goal, which set a program record, to put
the University of Redlands up 2-0 against Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe University of La
Verne.
With the score, Schunk passed former Bulldog great Adam Acosta
’05 who found the back of the net on 50 different occasions
throughout his collegiate career and formerly held the team’s
record for most career goals.
The Bulldogs outplayed the Leopards, winning by a 3-0 final and
taking the shot advantage (11-7) and the shot-on-goal advantage
(5-0).
Fakkema put Redlands on the board in the fourth minute, giving the
Bulldogs the early 1-0 advantage. Schunk’s goal came in the
beginning of the second half, making use of a rebound off of a shot
by junior defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA). The team put away the
Leopards in the 74th minute as sophomore midfielder Gilbert Flores
(Woodlake, CA) drilled in his second goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) earned the shutout
for the Bulldogs due in part to a tenacious defense that held the
Leopards without a shot on goal.
La Verne goalkeeper Adam Jaime played 79 minutes of the match,
stopping two shots and allowing three goals.
Redlands matches up next against Whittier College on Saturday,
Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Graham Field in Whittier.
