No. 8 Redlands Drops 3-1 Decision to The College of New Jersey

Despite outshooting the The College of New Jersey, the No.8-ranked University of Redlands men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to the Lions on Aug. 31.

Redlands doubled New Jersey’s shot total but was unable to connect on all but one of the shots. The Bulldogs recorded 16 shots while the Lions let off just eight.

Senior forward Alex Parker (Chula Vista, CA) started off the scoring in the 27th minute after junior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA) dropped a pass in front, and Parker shot to the left, beating out Lion goalkeeper Eric Goldwaser.

Before the end of the first half, the Lions responded with two goals. Kevin Luber scored unassisted in the 36th minute, and Chris Nelan scored the go-ahead goal in the 39th minute off of a Phill Cunha pass.

The Bulldogs came out firing in the second half, uncorking seven shots before New Jersey thwarted Redlands’ momentum shift when Cunha scored in the 75th minute, putting the Lions out in front 3-1.

Senior forward Ross Schunk (Portland, OR) led all players with six shots, including five on goal. Parker shot four times and connected on his only shot on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Jason Smuckler (Woodland Hills, CA) tallied two saves on five shots on goal in his second game tending the net for the maroon and gray.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the season while the Lions moved to 2-0.

Redlands returns to action again against Principia College (MO) at Farquhar Field on Thursday, Sept. 4, opening a two-game homestand.
