Art Salvesen Resigns as Head Men's Golf Coach, "Butch" Edge Takes over Decorated Program

Director of Athletics and Physical Education Jeff Martinez announced on Friday that Art Salvesen has resigned as the Head Men’s Golf Coach at the University of Redlands, effective immediately.

Salvesen joined the staff at the University of Redlands in 2000, following a successful stint with the Redlands High School Terriers. During his first seven seasons with the Bulldogs, Salvesen guided the team to a 37-5 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) record, including back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003, and again in 2005 and 2006. (Due to a change in the conference’s format, the team no longer competes in dual matches.)

Under Salvesen's leadership, the Redlands men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships eight times during the past ten seasons. The Bulldogs have placed in the top ten all but once and finished second at the NCAA Championships four times in five years from 2004-2008. Salvesen was named the Eaton Golf Pride West Region Coach of the Year in 2006.

In addition, Salvesen has been instrumental in the development of the Redlands women’s golf program. Since its move to varsity status less than four years ago, he has embraced the program and contributed a significant amount of time, expertise and resources to the women’s team.

“Artie has been a tremendous asset to our department and golf programs,” Martinez said. “His service, knowledge and commitment have resulted in unprecedented success for our men’s program while greatly contributing to the establishment of our women’s team.”

Stepping in for Salvesen, Howard “Butch” Edge takes over the men’s golf team, following four years as the program’s assistant coach. Edge earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Redlands and was inducted into the Bulldog Bench Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.

Prior to his return to Redlands, Edge served as the Athletic Director at nearby Bloomington High School from 2000-2004. He also gained valuable experience as an assistant softball coach at Texas A&M University for seven years and as a head coach at Santa Ana College, where he led the Lady Dons to a state championship. Currently, Edge teaches at Bloomington High School.
