Bulldog Men’s Golf Takes Second at NCAA Championships

The University of Redlands men’s golf team garnered a second-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships at Chateau Elan in Georgia with a four-round total of 1195. On the final day, the Bulldogs sat just three strokes back of the national title.

After their first-round showing of 304, the Bulldogs moved into third place with an improved score of 300 on day two. The third round of 293 proved to be the difference-maker for Redlands as the team moved into familiar territory at second place. The Bulldogs have finished as national runners-up in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Redlands put together a solid final round of 298 and overcame then-leader St. John Fisher College but was out-done by St. John’s University (MN), who shot a 291 and moved up four spots to win the coveted title.

Sophomore standout Ross Canavan (Redlands, CA) led the Bulldogs with his fifth-place finish of 293 for nine over par. Due to his stellar season and national showing, Canavan landed on the Division III PING All-America First Team. The Bulldogs gained a four-round total of 297 from junior E.J. Stenftenagel (Indian Wells, CA), who finished tied for 10th at the championships and earned All-America Second Team honors. After a tough first day, freshman Alex Hedlund (Arlington, WA) came back with solid scores to finish tied for 23rd at 302, earning a spot on the Third Team. Rounding out the Bulldogs, freshman Scott Pena (Encinitas, CA) and junior J.C. Riter (Portland, OR) posted four-round totals of 311 to finish tied for 57th overall.
