U of R Men's Basketball survives Chapman 86-76 as they sit alone atop SCIAC

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team was without their two leading scorers Wednesday night, but managed to pull out an 86-76 win over Chapman University.

The Bulldogs, who improve to 14-4, 8-1 SCIAC now sit alone atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings, 0.5 a game ahead of Pomona-Pitzer and a game in front of No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  

Robert Power (Pacific Palisades, CA) went off for the Maroon and Grey powering in a season high 19-points off the bench in 28 minutes, going 7-of-14 from the field along with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Colin McCarthy (Redwood City, CA) also added 19 points going 6-of-9 from the field and picking up 12 points from behind the arc.  Khyree Armstead (Mountlake Terrace, WA) posted 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals and Nathaniel Johnson (Seattle, WA) would support inside with 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night coupled with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. 

The Bulldogs got off to a quick start in the opening two minutes, holding an 8-2 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Cameron Brown (Bakersfield, CA) and McCarthy followed by a jumper from Power. 

Redlands was able to maintain their lead throughout the half, going in front by nine, 22-13, at the 12:52 mark when Khair Jackson (Canoga Park, CA) hit a three off a Power assist.

The Panthers got as close as two, 24-22, but the U of R was able to gain some breathing room by holding Chapman scoreless for the final 1:32, while extending their lead to five, 41-36, to end the half. 

In the opening minute of the second half, Sam Abere (Lake Oswego, OR) had his first positive stretch of the game after dealing with foul trouble early in the first half, hitting a three and knocking down a jumper to extend the UR lead to eight, 46-38.

At the 14:44 mark the Bulldogs took their first double-digit lead of the game, 55-45, off a Power three.

Redlands looked in control with 10:38 remaining following another McCarthy three that tied their largest lead of the game at 13, 63-50.  But over the next 4:55, CU went on an 18-5 run that tied the game up for the first time since the scoreline was 0-0.

Seconds later after seeing the game get tied; Power would hit a three to give the Bulldogs their final lead of the game as they would finish things off on an 18-8 run to get the win 86-76. 

The Bulldogs shot 47% from the field, 40.9% from deep, and 57.7% from the free-throw line.  They hauled in 33 rebounds, 17 points off 15 CU turnovers, added 40 points in the paint and received 29 bench points.  

Redlands travels to Thousand Oaks, CA this Saturday, January 28 for a road game against California Lutheran University beginning at 7:00pm.
