MBB SCIAC Preview | University of Redlands at Caltech (By the Numbers)

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team has two games remaining on their regular season schedule and will be back in action this Wednesday, February 16 on the road when they travel to take on Caltech beginning at 7:00pm.  The Bulldogs look to get revenge on the Beavers from their previous match-up where CIT won 84-73 inside Currier Gym.

The Bulldogs are locked into the eight-team Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament but can still theoretically reach fourth place and earn a home game next week in the quarterfinals if they win out and Cal Lutheran (CLU), who they beat twice already, drops both of their final contests. Sixth place is the lowest UR could finish, and they are only a half game behind the Beavers for fifth.

University of Redlands Coming into the Game

The Bulldogs kept their hopes of hosting a first-round game alive with a massive 16-point comeback over the final 10 minutes at Cal Lutheran on Saturday. With the win they hold the tie breaker by sweeping the season series if the two finished deadlocked.

Redlands has won two of their last three and currently sit at 10-10, 6-7 SCIAC.

On the season the Maroon and Grey have been successful when they hold opponents to 75 points or less, going 9-1, and 1-9 when allowing more than 75 points.

Caltech Coming into the Game

The Beavers are on a two-game losing streak after losing to Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer. Like the Bulldogs, the Beavers are locked into the postseason tournament. They sit a half game ahead of Redlands in fifth place at 11-11, 6-7 SCIAC. Unlike the Bulldogs, Caltech has three games remaining, one more than the U of R, so they have one more game that can improve or worsen their standing.

Of note from their game against the Bulldogs in January, they shot 47.1 percent from the field, their second highest percentage of the season. They made 11 threes, tied for fourth most in the conference.

By the Numbers

University of Redlands – The Bulldogs sit fourth in scoring offense (76.7 PPG), eighth in field goal percentage (41.9 percent), seventh in three-point percentage (32.6 percent), third in offensive rebounds (11.4 ORPG), and fourth in fewest turnovers (12.6 TPG).

Redlands also has the seventh best scoring defense (77.3 PPG), seventh in opponent field goal percentage (44.7 percent), ninth in three-point percentage defense (36.7 percent), eighth in rebounding margin (minus 5.8), and third in steals (8.1 SPG).

Caltech – On offense the Beavers are not a high scoring team, averaging the eighth most or second fewest points (67.5 PPG). Despite a good showing at Currier Gym, the Beavers have not been efficient with the ball, shooting the lowest percentage in the SCIAC (39.4 percent), currently eighth in three-point percentage (30.4), and seventh in free throw percentage (66.8 percent). Where they lack in efficiency, they make up in threes made and attempted per game, ranking first (8.8 3PT FGM) and second (28.9 3PT FGA).

Other notable stats for the Beavers on defense are scoring defense (70.5 percent | fourth), opponent field goal percentage (42.9 percent | sixth), three point percentage defense (30.6 percent | second), and rebounding margin (plus 3.2 | third).
