MBB SCIAC Preview: University of Redlands vs. University of La Verne (By the Numbers)

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's basketball team returns to the court this Wednesday, February 9 as they look to win their second straight game for the first time inside Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play when they host the University of La Verne at 7:00pm. 

The Bulldogs currently sit in sixth place in the SCIAC standings, only 0.5 games behind fifth place Caltech having played one more game. The top eight SCIAC teams will advance to the postseason tournament with the top four teams hosting the first round. In order to host a first-round game, the Bulldogs will need to catch fourth place Cal Lutheran (CLU) who are 7-4 and two games ahead of Redlands with the second head-to-head matchup still to be played after the first went the way of the Bulldogs, 83-76, at Currier Gym in January.

University of Redlands Coming into the Game
The Bulldogs are currently 9-9, 5-6 SCIAC and are coming off an 80-59 road win at Occidental College on Monday as they utilized a reshuffled lineup that produced 19 points from Josh Himel in only 16 minutes of action as he made his first start.  They also received a big game from Romeo Mays who had seven points, 10 rebounds and a season-high six blocks. The Bulldogs made 13 threes, tying a season-high from all the way back in December when they made 13 threes at UC Santa Cruz, in a 76-62 win. Redlands also tied a season-high for blocks with seven, matching their total from an 83-76 home win against Cal Lutheran.

University of La Verne Coming into the Game
The Leopards have lost two-straight but going further into their schedule they have lost 10 of their last 11 dating back to a win on December 9, 2021. They are 0-9 in SCIAC play and 3-16 overall. In their three wins this season the Leopards have defended well, allowing a combined 187 points (62.3 PPG). Their last win was against Caltech when they picked up a 74-59 win that came off a 13-point road loss, only two days prior, at the Beavers. In the win they shot a season-high 53.8 percent, only took 12 threes (which tied a season-low), and only committed 15 fouls.

University of Redlands – The Bulldogs are averaging 77.5 points per game (PPG), on 42.2 percent shooting from the field. They are making 8.2 threes per game on 24.5 attempts for a 33.3 three-point field goal percentage.
