Redlands Men's Basketball Storms Past Simpson

The University of Redlands men's basketball team put together a strong second half to beat Simpson College 87-75 Wednesday afternoon.

Three Bulldogs finished the game in double figures, led by junior guard Jack Roggin (Toluca Lake, CA) with 20 points. Senior wing Brittian Foster (Long Beach, CA) contributed 12 points off the bench, while junior wing Gary Menary (Grass Valley, CA) added another 11 points.

Redlands out-rebounded the Storm 49-to-34, with Menary grabbing a game-high nine boards.

It took a while for Redlands to get going and the Bulldogs found themselves trailing 13-2 four minutes into the game. Foster banked in a jump shot off a senior guard Thomas Scriven (Anaheim, CA) assist to stop Simpson from getting too much momentum.

The Bulldogs went on an 11-2 run to pull within one possession, 32-30, with just under five and a half minutes left in the half. Senior forward David Menary (Grass Valley, CA) drained a triple to start the scoring spree, which was capped by a junior forward Parker Landolf (nine points) jumper.

It helped get Redlands back in the game as freshman forward Griffin Barker (nine points) hit a three just before the buzzer sounded to put the Bulldogs down two, 40-38, at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half, Roggin gave Redlands the lead after stealing the ball away and laying it in the hoop, 47-46.

Simpson took back the lead briefly, but the Bulldogs grabbed it back and didn't let go despite the Storm putting in a late push.

The Bulldogs held onto a 74-71 lead heading down the stretch, but the Storm pulled within one, 74-73, before Gary Menary scored on a Barker assist to keep some distance. As Simpson tried to foul to get the ball back, the Bulldogs made their free throws to runaway with the 87-75 victory.

Redlands takes a break for the holidays and is back in action on Dec. 31, hosting Bethesda at 2 p.m. in Currier Gym.
