After beating the Banana Slugs in Santa Cruz in late November, the Bulldogs kept the ball rolling this evening with a non-conference victory in Currier Gym. Despite UCSC keeping things close with three ties in the first nine minutes of action, Redlands pulled away to take the game 61-49.
With the score knotted 9-9 at the 11:36-minute mark, sophomore guard Colin Au (Rolling Hills Estates, CA) swiped a steal that sparked a 12-0 run. Au assisted senior guard Thomas Scriven's (Anaheim, CA) layup on the ensuing drive to ignite the run. Junior guard Jack Roggin (Toluca Lake, CA) hit two of his five three-pointers in that span to make the score 21-9 with 7:52 left in the first.
First-year forward Griffin Barker (Kirkland, WA) and junior guard Vincenzo Ferrari (Burlingame, CA) chipped in a bucket each in the final two minutes of action to enter halftime with a 10-point, 29-19 lead. Ferrari also added an assist and a steal in that timeframe.
The Bulldogs came out of the break all cylinders firing as junior wing Gary Menary (Grass Valley, CA) batted a steal and dished out an assist for another Roggin trey-ball. Senior guard Hass Berry (Riverside, CA) followed that with a layup and a three-pointer of his own to push Redlands' lead to 37-24 at the 17:34-minute mark. Senior forward David Menary (Grass Valley, CA) assisted both buckets.
Two minutes later, G. Menary completed the and-one play to add three points for the Maroon and Gray.
At the 11:12 marker, Roggin lit up the scoreboard not once, but twice with two buckets from beyond the arc to give Redlands a 17-point lead midway through the second half.
The teams traded buckets through the next seven minutes of play as Barker laid one in at 3:34 to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night at 57-39.
Despite the Banana Slugs chipping away at the deficit in the final minutes, Redlands had built a big enough lead to take the game 61-49.
Roggin went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc for a team-leading 17 points. Junior forward Spencer Bandow (Covina, CA) had a good day on the defensive end, hauling in nine rebounds. Redlands shot 42.9% from the field. In addition, the team also out-rebounded UCSC, 42-26.
Redlands (6-2) is set to take on Simpson College (IA) at San Diego City College on Wednesday, December 18 at 1 p.m. After a short holiday break, the Bulldogs welcome Bethesda University to Currier Gym for a non-conference showdown at 2 p.m.
