It was announced earlier today by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) office that senior forward Al Bjekovic (Maribor, Slovenia) of the University of Redlands was named to the All-SCIAC Men's Basketball First Team. He repeats as an All-Conference performer after last year's Second-Team nod.
During the 2015-16 season, Bjekovic played an instrumental role in the Bulldogs' tied-for-second-place showing in the conference standings and SCIAC Postseason Tournament final appearance.
While starting in 15 conference games, Bjekovic served as a workhorse who either made plays on the perimeter or utilized his strength on the low post for tough buckets. He averaged 31.1 minutes per contest while nearly totaling a double-double per game with marks of 18.1 points and 8.3 rebounds. His accuracy and efficiency allowed him to earn a 41.9 shooting percentage, which resulted in a total of 272 points in the conference season. His aggressive play booked him numerous tickets to the charity stripe, where he went 69-for-91 for a 75.8 free-throw percentage.
Bjekovic tallied double-digit scoring in 14 of the 15 conference games he played, topping out at a season-high 32 points in a 66-58 victory over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on February 3. In the contest, he was a flawless 12-for-12 at the free-throw line while draining four trey-balls. He backed his offensive efforts the following night with a 28-point effort in a 75-71 win against Caltech.
On the year, Bjekovic recorded five double-doubles in points and rebounds during conference competitions.
