Redlands Men's Basketball Stumbles to Chapman in Home Opener

After a slow and ugly start by both teams, the University of Redlands men's basketball team struggled to find its stride, resulting in a difficult 67-78 loss in Currier Gym on Saturday night.

Neither team shot particularly well through the first few minutes but the Panthers remained patient and eventually converted 28 points off the Bulldogs' 17 turnovers to provide the wining difference. Beyond this, Redlands also made significantly fewer trips to the charity stripe with Chapman going 28-for-45 as compared to the Maroon and Gray's 10-for-18 showing.

Redlands held a one-point lead with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half but the Panthers answered with a 7-0 run make it a 22-16 ball game.

Although the Bulldogs cut the deficit to one on a sophomore guard Brian Kuklok (Poway, CA) three-pointer, Chapman closed out the frame with a 36-28 advantage.

The second half appeared to be all Chapman, which put up a 21-point lead with nearly 13 minutes left in the game.

Kuklok and sophomore guard Tristan Kirk (Redlands, CA) provided their best efforts to carry the Bulldogs down the stretch, helping them to cut the deficit to 10 in the final seconds, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers.

Kirk put up a team-high 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Kuklok came off the bench to contribute 16 points, which included a trio of three-pointers.

In addition, senior center Andrew Mills (Newcastle, WA) stepped up with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Chapman (2-0) gained a double-double from senior Justin Riley, who tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals. Senior Griffin Ramme provided his second 23-point performance in as many games, while also dishing out four assists. Junior Brandon Lin and senior Max Piner rounded out the Panthers' top scorers with 17 and 11, respectively.

Redlands (0-2) looks to halt this early skid during Tuesday's game at Cal Baptist University in Riverside at 7:30 p.m.
