Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wins 61st Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament

Championship: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. Whitman
The Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges won the 61st Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament on Saturday night, prevailing over Whitman College (WA) by a score of 79-78. After securing a 22-point lead, CMS held off a persistent Whitman College (WA), who inched its way back into the game in the final minutes. With 6:38 to go in the second period, the Missionaries cut the lead to six and then pulled within four at 4:38. Following back-and-forth play by both teams, Whitman's Max Adcox drained a three-pointer with 52 seconds to go to move within one point. However, CMS took care of business at the charity stripe, converting five of eight opportunities in the final seconds and held on for the win. Chris Blees led the Stags with his MVP performance, scoring 35 points and adding nine rebounds and five assists. Conner Faught chipped in 11 points while Tejas Gala came up with nine. For Whitman, Chris Faidley boasted 29 points while Brandon Shaw contributed 23 points in the loss.

Third Place: Whitworth vs. UC Santa Cruz
In the third-place game, Whitworth University (WA) gained an 11-point lead midway through the first half and never looked back defeat the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz by a score of 90-58. Shooting 51.7% from the floor, the Pirates controlled the game throughout, as Nate Montgomery led the team with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Calvin Jurich added 22 points, nine boards, and eight assists, while Felix Friedt chipped in 17 points and three rebounds. For Santa Cruz, Niel Brennan put away 15 points and pulled down six boards, as Ryan Matsuoka added 14 points and five rebounds.

Consolation Championship: Chapman vs. Cal State East Bay
Chapman University came up with an exciting 70-68 overtime victory against the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay to capture the consolation championship. In a back-and-forth contest that included six tied scores and 22 lead changes, the Panthers shot slightly better than Cal State East Bay, earning a mark of 45.3%. The overtime period came down to two made free-throws by Justin Riley, who tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Ben Ricard also added 17 points while Kyle Wood came up with 18 points and five assists. CSUEB was led by Will Freedman with 18 points, and Fabien Baker with 15 points. Jamil Muchell chipped in 13 points for the Pioneers.

Seventh Place: Redlands vs. Southwestern
In the seventh-place match, the University of Redlands Bulldogs earned their second win of the season by fighting back in the second period to defeat Southwestern College, 79-70. In another tight game that saw 14 tied scores and 18 lead changes, the Bulldogs went ahead for good on a made free-throw by Bryan Schwartz with 7:35 to go in the game. Redlands gained 16 points from Patrick Coffey while Shwartz and Matt Dietrich chipped in 14 points each. Southwestern’s Derek Gossard provided a game-leading 17 points as Daniel Stanton came up with 14.
