Football Preview: University of Redlands vs. George Fox University

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands football team opens their 2022 season with a home opener against 2021 season-opening opponent George Fox University (GFU) on Saturday, September 3 with kickoff at 7:05 p.m.

The Bulldog made the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs where they lost to Linfield and finished the season 8-2 overall after winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship with a perfect 6-0 record.

On the road to open 2021, the Bulldogs pulled out a 24-14 win over the Bruins. In the win the Bulldogs led by as many as 17 points and converted 8-of-14 third downs, outgained the Bruins 430-267, and won the time of possession 34:03-25:57.

Scott Tinsley (Capitola, Calif.) tied for a game-high with seven total tackles, recorded a tackle for loss (TFL) and had a pass breakup. Fellow returning member of the secondary, Jadin Michaels (Palm Springs, Calif.), had six total tackles with five solo.

Previous Meetings

The Bulldogs have not lost this matchup since 2017, winning three in-a-row, and have not allowed 20 points or more since 2016 when they allowed 22 points and won 31-22.

Notable Bruin Returners

The Bruins went 6-3 in 2021 and return their starting quarterback Haiden Schaan who threw for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a 62 percent completion percentage. Schaan also scored twice on the ground. In last year's game Schaan went 23-31 for 251 yards and one touchdown through the air.

Another notable offensive returner for the Bruins is wide receiver Leon Johnson III. He posted 20 catches for 365 yards, and two touchdowns in 2021. He also had three total tackles, one TFL, and blocked two kicks. Against the Bulldogs last season, Johnson III caught six balls for 91 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball GFU returns safety and kick returner Justin Montijo who had a career-high 57 total tackles, .5 TFL, three interceptions, five passes defended, and one fumble recovery in 2021. As a returner he returned 12 punts for 222 yards (18.5 yard average), and one touchdown. He returned seven kickoffs for 195 yards (27.9 yard average). He posted five total tackles in the season opener against Redlands.

Along the defensive line is Anthony Pasion who collected 31 total tackles, two TFLs, and had a pass defended. In the game last year Pasion had four total tackles.
