Bulldog football welcomes the Occidental College Tigers to Ted Runner Stadium for Saturday's regular-season finale.  Redlands looks to celebrate its 20 seniors with a solid performance in their final home game, allowing them to cap off their respective careers in the best way possible.

LAST WEEK

Oxy traveled to Thousand Oaks to face off against Cal Lutheran University but fell to the Kingsmen in an apparent shootout, 39-49.  Bryan Scott and Samuel Stekol put together a quality air attack by connecting on three touchdowns but the Tiger defense allowed 674 yards of total offense by the home team as highlighted by six passing scores that matched the school record.

In a showdown of two undefeated SCIAC football teams, last Saturday's game between the Redlands Bulldogs and the Chapman University Panthers provided a high-quality battle in Ted Runner Stadium.  However, in a tale of two halves, Chapman earned the slight advantage with a stronger performance in the second to garner a 31-27 decision that resulted in the Maroon and Gray's first loss since September 20.

Following the game against Chapman, the coaches announced the Bulldog players of the week:

  • OFFENSE:  senior wide receiver Sam Angelo for his key catches and very effective blocking throughout the game
  • DEFENSE:  senior linebacker Jordan Bixler for a strong performance against the run; also provided pressure to the Chapman QB
  • KICKING: junior kicker Sean Murray for making two important field goals
  • PRACTICE:  junior Colin Spencer, who showed great improvement in new position as he moved from wide receiver to defensive back /corner; successfully gave our receivers a great look in covering and preparing them for game.

THE BULLDOGS

By the Numbers:  Redlands still leads all of NCAA Division III in turnover margin, now with an impressive mark of 2.88.  This means the team is causing way more turnovers than it gives up.  The Bulldogs rank second in the country in red-zone offense, converting 97.1 of their opportunities into a score.  Finally, the squad sits seventh in punt returns (19.59 yards per attempt) and 11th in kickoff returns (25.28 yards).

Team Captains:  Senior linebacker Michael Tootle and sophomore quarterback Kevin Russell were elected to the leadership role at the completion of last season, and now are joined by senior offensive lineman Aaron Hinkle and senior defensive lineman Jordan Bixler after their preseason selection by the team and staff.  All four are taking on this responsibility for the first time during their tenure at Redlands.

At the Helm: Now in his 27th year of guiding the Bulldog football program, Mike Maynard consistently establishes himself as one of the top, small-college coaches in the West Region, if not the entire nation.  Maynard's teams have posted an overall winning percentage of .685 (as of 2013), which includes an impressive .793 mark in SCIAC play while winning 11 conference championships. Maynard continues to build on the pride and tradition of Bulldog football, including seven NCAA play-off appearances. During his tenure, he has coached multiple All-Americans, All-SCIAC honorees, and academic stand-outs.

THE OXY TIGERS

By the Numbers:  Statistically, the Oxy offense ranks 25th in NCAA Division III for passing yards with 289.9 yards per game.

Overall, Bryan Scott has shored up the starting quarterback role, amassing a 63.6% completion rate for 1,874 yards through the air.  He has thrown 16 touchdowns and five picks this season.  Samuel Stekol serves as his top target with 38 catches for nearly 700 yards and 10 scores.  He averages close to 100 yards per game.  On the ground, the Tigers look to Kwame Do to contribute important yards, as shown by his team-leading 115.2 average.  Currently, he has zero fumbles on the season.

Devin Chapman heads up the Tigers' defensive cogs, tallying 53 tackles on the season, including 2.5 for a loss of 10 yards.  However, Dallas Gosselin and Aaron Noffke have combined for six of Occidental's 10 sacks, pushing back opponent QBs a combined 23 yards in the process.  On pass protection, Chaz Shizumura leads the Tigers with nine break-ups but Shay Mueller has hauled in three of the team's seven picks on the season.

Team Captains:    The Occidental captains include #19 Samuel Stekol (senior wide receiver from Manhattan Beach, CA), #21 Teran Mawhinney (senior defensive back from Fort Collins, CO), and #46 Ross Fiegener (senior linebacker from Chester, CA).

At the Helm:  Doug Semones is in his second year with the Occidental football program.  He gained experience as an assistant coach at Yale University, served as the defensive line coach for the University of Hawaii, and coached at various high schools.  He also worked as the special teams coordinator for the Hawaiian Islanders of the Arena Football League.  No stranger to the SCIAC, Semones graduated from Cal Lutheran University with a degree in Physical Education.

LAST MEETING

The 2013 showdown was memorable for the Bulldogs in multiple ways.  They registered the second-highest number of rushing yards in program history while opening SCIAC competition with a solid 38-21 victory in Eagle Rock.  In addition, quarterback Kevin Russell made his first start with the Maroon and Gray and helped the Bulldogs to pull away from the Tigers with a pair of 14-point quarters.

SERIES HISTORY

The Oxy-Redlands history goes way back into the history books with Redlands currently owning a slight edge at 53-51-2 against the Tigers.  Although Occidental won the first eight meetings beginning in 1910, the Bulldogs have won the last four by a scoring margin of 180 to 75.  In 1990, Head Coach Mike Maynard recorded his first victory over the Tigers in a solid 52-14 decision.  That triumph halted the Occidental's previous streak at 10 consecutive wins from 1982 to 1989.  Maynard is now 16-10 in his career against the Tigers.
