LAST WEEK

The University of Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges both rattled off impressive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victories last week.

CMS scored at least a touchdown in every quarter en route to defeating the University of La Verne by a score of 40-24 during its Homecoming contest.  After amassing 544 yards on offense, the Stag O-line was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.  In addition, CMS recorded season-highs of rushing yardage (312) and total touchdowns (6).

The Redlands football team captured the third-annual Smudge Pot Trophy with an emphatic 59-27 win over the visiting Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University in Ted Runner Stadium.  Playing for the recently-established honor that celebrates the heritage and history of the citrus industries in Ventura and San Bernardino counties, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead and proceeded to shut out the visitors in two quarters for their second straight victory.  The Bulldogs gained a pair of special-teams touchdowns, with freshman Alex Andrighetto stepping into the kick-return role by taking a 98-yard return to the house at the end of the second quarter, before senior James Ramirez powered his way 71 yards downfield to the end zone on punt return in the early goings of the third quarter.

THE BULLDOGS

By the Numbers:  View all of Redlands' season statistics and the national report.

Redlands currently leads all football programs in NCAA Division III in turnover margin (3.50), meaning the Bulldogs are forcing many more turnovers than they are giving up.  In addition, the Maroon and Gray is ranked third in the nation for punt returns (24.25), 10th in net punting (36.75), and 10th in red-zone offense (0.938).

Team Captains:  Senior linebacker Michael Tootle and junior quarterback Kevin Russell were elected to the leadership role at the completion of last season, and now are joined by senior offensive lineman Aaron Hinkle and senior defensive lineman Jordan Bixler after their preseason selection by the team and staff.  All four are taking on this responsibility for the first time during their tenure at Redlands.

At the Helm: Now in his 27th year of guiding the Bulldog football program, Mike Maynard consistently establishes himself as one of the top, small-college coaches in the West Region, if not the entire nation.  Maynard's teams have posted an overall winning percentage of .685 (as of 2013), which includes an impressive .793 mark in SCIAC play while winning 11 conference championships. Maynard continues to build on the pride and tradition of Bulldog football, including seven NCAA play-off appearances. During his tenure, he has coached multiple All-Americans, All-SCIAC honorees, and academic stand-outs.

At the Helm:  Kyle Sweeney graduated from Occidental College as a four-year letter-winner in both football and baseball.  Prior to taking over at CMS, he gained a variety of Division III experiences from the University of Chicago, MacMurray College, Endicott College, and Illinois Wesleyan University.   He entered the start of this fourth season in 2014 with a 7-20 record.
