The University of Redlands football team returns home to the friendly confines of Ted Runner Stadium for Saturday's kick-off against No. 5 Linfield College (OR) at 7:05 p.m.   After a tough showing in Belton, TX, the Bulldogs look forward to playing in front of their home crowd, which promises to be excited for a great game following the festivities of the annual food-truck event known as Rah Rah Redlands.

THE BULLDOGS

Top Dawgs:  Equipped with the program's 29th Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title, the 2014 edition of Redlands football works to build upon its recent momentum by exceeding its high standards of excellence and success.  After competing in the NCAA Division III Championships for the seventh time last season, the Maroon and Gray remains focused on returning to the national stage while achieving multiple programmatic goals along the way.

Overall, the Bulldogs count on a quartet of USA College Football Preseason All-Americans to set the stage in Saturday's home opener.  First-teamer Aaron Hinkle heads up the offensive line that strives to create scoring opportunities with flawless execution.  Second-teamers Michael Tootle and Griffin Lord work to guide the defense from their respective line-backing positions.  Finally, third-teamer Kevin Russell remains under center after establishing himself during the Bulldogs' undefeated conference showing last season.

Positive Pieces:  Despite the loss in Belton, TX, the Maroon and Gray came away with plenty of positives to grow on.

After competing against Mary Hardin-Baylor, the Bulldogs named three players of the game for their effort, success, and execution on the field.  Senior wide receiver James Ramirez pulled in six catches for 72 yards to lead the team while also making key blocks, en route to being honored as the Offensive Player of the Game.  With the help of Special Teams, junior punter Sean Murray averaged more than 40 yards a punt, earning the award for the Kicking Game.  Finally, senior defensive back Stephen Reyes racked up 10 tackles, forced one fumble, broke up two passes, and snagged a goal-line interception as the Bulldogs' Defensive Player of the Game.

"We want to be the best so we need to play the best. Overall, it is positive for us to get into these kinds of events in this kind of arena against competition of this magnitude."

---Head Coach Mike Maynard

Hungry for More:  Last season, Redlands won the coveted Smudge Pot Trophy against Cal Lutheran University, captured the program's 29th conference title, and competed in the NCAA Division III Championships for the seventh time.

But the Bulldogs aren't done yet.  They work to compete against high-caliber opponent in order to move into the next echelon of success by repeating these feats and capturing an NCAA playoff victory for the first time.

Team Captains:  Tootle and Russell were elected to the leadership role at the completion of last season, and now are joined by Hinkle and senior defensive lineman Jordan Bixler after their recent selection by the team and staff.  All four are taking on this responsibility for the first time during their tenure at Redlands.

At the Helm: Now in his 27th year of guiding the Bulldog football program, Mike Maynard consistently establishes himself as one of the top, small-college coaches in the West Region, if not the entire nation.  Maynard's teams have posted an overall winning percentage of .685 (as of 2013), which includes an impressive .793 mark in SCIAC play while winning 11 conference championships. Maynard continues to build on the pride and tradition of Bulldog football, including seven NCAA play-off appearances. During his tenure, he has coached multiple All-Americans, All-SCIAC honorees, and academic stand-outs.

Did you know?  For the first time in Maynard's 27-year tenure, Redlands returns its entire coaching staff, providing great stability and continuity within the ranks.  In addition, the 11 familiar coaches welcomed former student-athlete Daniel Davis '14 to the sidelines as an offensive assistant, working primarily with Coach Taylor Chapatte and the wide receivers.  In addition, Chapatte and Coach Aaron De La Rosa team up to coordinate the kicking game for the first time.

THE LINFIELD WILDCATS

Cats' Meow:  Linfield holds high expectations for the 2014 season, believing it can "break through the glass ceiling and return to the NCAA Division III championship game" after a decade away from its fourth national title.  The Wildcats are consistent contenders, suffering only one loss in four of the last five seasons, all of which came during the NCAA tournament.   In addition, the squad has won five consecutive Northwest Conference championships.  This season, they tout a sizeable group of talented receivers to counterbalance the fact that they are breaking in a new quarterback.  All-American Steven Schultz heads up the offensive line.  On the other side of the ball, Linfield relies on its capable defensive line to set the stage for an otherwise new contingent in the secondary and line-backing corps.

At the Helm:  With more than 25 years of experience at Linfield in various roles, Joseph Smith is among the college's longest tenured coaches in any sport at Linfield.  He is in his ninth year as head coach of the Wildcats and began the 2014 campaign with a 71-15 record that includes five straight conference titles and NCAA appearances.

Team Captains:  Linfield chooses to announce its captains weekly on Fridays.  This week's captains were not available at the time of publication.
