National Football Foundation Recognizes Bulldog Football

University of Redlands football seniors running back Zack Schafer (Saugus, CA), defensive lineman Gavril Gabriel (Downey, CA) and defensive back Conor Drake (Jackson, CA) were inducted into the 2009 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society while the Bulldog football team garnered 2008 College Division Team of the Year laurels for the San Bernardino County chapter of the organization, according to an announcement received today from the National Football Foundation.

Nomination for induction into the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society requires a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative GPA throughout the entire course of undergraduate study, contribution toward the team as a starter or as a key reserve and progress toward degree requirements as mandated by the NCAA.

A total of 564 players from 266 schools qualified for membership in the society's third year, a 27 percent increase from the 2008 class. In its inaugural year in 2007, the Hampshire Honor Society honored more than 300 students from 195 schools.

Following a 2008 season that culminated in a 7-2 record (4-2 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), the Bulldogs received their second College Division Team of the Year selection in as many years, as awarded by the San Bernardino County chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Redlands fielded one of the stingiest defenses in the nation as the Maroon and Gray ranked first in NCAA Division III in tackles for loss, rush defense and net punting.

San Bernardino County, the largest county in the United States by area and larger in mass than nine states, boasts three junior colleges, one university and more than fifty high school football programs. Founded in 2004, the 45 members of the San Bernardino County chapter and Chapter President Jeffrey Johnston take advantage of the strong football ties in the community to fulfill their mission of promoting amateur football.
